I got an extra t43... What parts can i salvage?

#1 Post by will1087 » Sat Aug 19, 2006 10:46 am

I currently have 2 thinkpads t43 in my possession. They are basically the same t43 with the only difference being the processor.

Could i take the processor out of the faster one and putting it in the slower one without voiding the warranty?

One of them is 1.73ghz, the other one being 1.86ghz.

Cheers,

Will

Yes it can be done just make sure to reinstall all the screw covers and make a nice job not breaking anything.

P.S. Remember to use artic silver 5.

If you did not know their speeds in advance, you would not be able to measure the speed difference between those processors. Leave it alone, unless you are interested in the adventure itself.

Hi,

If they are really identical, and only the processor is different, then instead of swapping processors, swap the hard drives... much easier!!

Why is it being scrapped. A T43 should still hold warranty. Check that out before doing anything hasty,

Not enough difference

The difference in speed between 1.73ghz and 1.86ghz is really small. IMHO, if the machines are otherwise equal, the tiny incremental performance gain is not worth the risk of disassembly, swap, and correct reassembly with proper thermal protection, especially if you want to keep the machine in warranty status. Much more performance can be gained by getting more RAM or improving the hard disk.

I am agree with claudeo, the 1.86ghz and my 2.13 ghz has only 6% difference.
And Also like cmarti said if you are going to replace the CPU, you will need to apply the silver 5 which is a pretty big job. And adding silver 5 more like to avoid the warranty than just replace the CPU.
I made a thead about adding silver 5, maybe you should take a look.
