New Thinkpad - 4 Problems / Questions
New Thinkpad - 4 Problems / Questions
I got a new Thinkpad T43 at work last week. After more than 40 hours installing all my software, bringing over files, configuring, etc I have several problems and questions. I really like this computer, maybe enough to buy one for home to replace my desktop. But need to get things a bit tighter and fix the one that is really a problem for me.
Will appreciate any and all help, especially on the following question which I think will be the toughest to solve. [censored], its even tough to describe, but let's try:
1. Video problem
I have a Tpad screen at 1400 x 1050 and a desktop LCD at 1280x 1024. I have set my appearance as I like and both look identical and very good.
I can view a jpg and print it in color and it matches the monitor closely.
But, I opened an app over Citrix and the grey window container was hot pink! All other colors on the desktop, images, etc look spot on. Just this container.
So, thinking it might have been a problem on the Citrix server, I did a screen capture of the pink container, then one of the grey container on my desktop - My Computer. I emailed them off and recipients (including myself at home) did not see what I see onscreen. The pink looks perfectly gray and the one that looks gray on my screens looks green. They print that way as well. In other words, if I do a screen capture of a pink windows container and print it to any of three color printers I have, they look perfectly gray.
So, I went into Display settings and set the Them to Windows Classic. All the gray on screen turned pink.
So, I do not believe it is the LCD or external monitor as they look identical. I looked at the Color Control Panel, have that at sRGB. I check everything I could possibly find on the ATI driver panel. Can find nothing that would cause this behavior.
I could almost understand if other colors have shifted. But it is only gray on containers and buttons that shifts. Looks grey, prints green. Or looks pink and prints grey.
HELP!! This one is a hair pulling experience.
Any suggestion will be very much appreciated.
One of the remaining three question has to do with the huge amount of disk space used and I am addressing that in another topic. If we can get this video problem solved, the next two should be much easier.

Well I have isolated the problem.
Seems that the ATI video driver is known to push red gamma. It also has a known conflict with Adobe Gamma Loader. They do not yet seem to have the fix for Thinkpads though they seem to for other notebook computers. Will just have to wait for that.
In the mena time, backing the ATI Red Channel gamma down to 70% and disbaling Adobe Gamma solved the problem.
Not an easy one to find.

I have done plenty of VNC with my T43 with the AGL and have yet to experience that.rebop wrote:Well I have isolated the problem.

But, wow, what a find. That must have taken awhile.

Indeed it did. About 8 hours from the time I discovered the problem until I had enough of a clue on what to Google.
Out of curiousity, which ATI do you have? Mobility X300? And what version Photoshop?
I'm wondering if maybe the AGL in CS is a bit different than previous versions even though it appears to be the same.
BTW, my 4 problems are now down to two - the final fix for the above (hopefully the next TPad ATI driver and the following:
I had my 1400x1050 T43 working at that res with my external working at 1280x1024 without Pan and Scan. If I docked, it pushed in the desktop a little from the right to realign wiondows and icons. When I undocked, the laptop was at 1400 and was fine.
Somehow I lost this setting and either get both at 1280 or the dektop at Pan and Scan. Presentation Director is not the most intuitive of programs and the ATI driver also has a checkbox for stretching the scrento fit. I don;t think I used this when I had it working as it was squeezing rather than stretching.
So, as long as I am asking for help in getting this back, the third part of the equation is that I'd liketo be able to hook up to a projector at 1024 x 768 as well and have none of these effect the other and to switch as needed automatically.
I'm not near the machine now, but I remeber Pres Dir as having choices such as default and other confusingly named profiles. Which should I choose for all of this and what setting do I need to apply.
Thanks again. Once this is done I just have to figure out how to get it to netork with my home machine since this is on a domain for work and home is on a workgroup and they seem mutually exclusive and I am done and can finally enjoy working with this laptop :^)

Probably as I have Photoshop 7.0 running on an ATI X300 so it could very well be that the AGL configs are different and causing that problem; in any case, it is good to know about this for later.
For the projector, it is best to plug in, come up with a profile on the spot, and then apply it to the Thinkpad and projector via the VGA port.

Ok, REALLY can use some help and advice with this LAST problem.
Spent over an hour playing with every conceivable combination of settings I could and I can not get this to work as it once did on changing display settings. Just to make it easy, lets just consider the Tpad and external LCD.
What I had was 1400x1050 on the TPad and 1280x1024 on the LCD. Undocked , everything looked like the way I like my desktop and proper resolution. Then docked, 1280x1024 and just about the same as the Tpad. Then whenundpocked again, icons had been moved slightly with blank space between the middle of the lower row and middle of the left hand row. But just fine.
Now, I can either get the same resolution on both monitors, which will not do, or the LCD gets pan and scan - also a no go.
There seems to be interaction between the Presentation Director and the Monitors Tab of the ATI panel in Display. The Stretch to fit screen and profiles in the ATI are also confusing.
So, where do I start to get what I desire and had at obn etime. Pick what setting in the Presentaionmanager? Or uninstall the Presentation Manager? And then what settings inthe ATI tabs?
This is the last thing and I am done withthe exception of my home netwwork which I won;t ask about here as it may be tricky since the TPAD is on a work domain and home is on a Workgroup and it may never work. But any help on the display will be very appreciated.

Just a bump hoping someone has suggestions for this. Spent another frustrating hour trying all sorts of combinations and no luck.
The presentation director when set to Tpad and DVI will not allow different resolutions for the two.
What would happen if I uninstalled Presentation Director? Would docking chnge the resolution properly from the ATI driver? I di dnot see a way to disable the Presentation Director or would try that.
Thanks.
