can a t42 boot from an external usb drive?

#1 Post by steve_zen » Wed Aug 23, 2006 2:57 pm

I have a external drive with an OS on board (XP) that I'd like to boot from so I can run a program that's on there that I can't seem to find anywhere online :(
I read somewhere that Dell's can do this, does the T42 have an option like this buried in the bios somewhere?
hehe, I should really just look shouldn't I, please be there though, I really need it to be !!!
thanks for any input it advance.

Yes, T42 can boot from USB device.

Make sure you either hit F12 during startup or change BIOS prerferences so USB device will be the one to boot from.

It is not as easy as you think.
As far as I know, you need a special-modified XP Install disk otherwise your XP won't boot, because of the missing USB drivers.

You can find all the neccessary informations here:

Good Luck!
