wireless questions

#1 Post by liquid_sonata » Tue Aug 17, 2004 6:44 pm

hey,

i'm using ibm access connections 3.21 with an intel 2200bg on a thinkpad t42p, 2378EZU. there are times when i try to connect to a wireless network at school or other access points (like starbuck's) and i get the message:

(1) "unable to connect to the selected wireless network. you may need to configure your system to support the authentication method that is in use. contact your network administrator."

what does this mean? what do you suggest i do in a case like this?

(2) there are other times when i do have a successful connection but can't navigate webpages or sign online. this was the case at school today. i'm basically baffled at why this is...

however at the very moment i type this i'm at home and am on a neighbor's wireless network, able to access webpages and talk on instant messaging programs...

(4) a bit disjointed, but i've another problem. network places > view network connections > and if i select the properties of any item there, the advanced tab tells me that "windows cannot display this information, WMI might be corrupted."

has anyone ever got that message, and how important is it? i reformatted my system from scratch, have all the latest drivers and updates from microsoft.

in short i'd be grateful for anyone to even deign a reply to this rather long-winded post.

If you are using Access Connections, make sure Windows is not trying to manage the connections (i.e., disable Windows Management).

Then, that message means Access Connections can't make a connection. If the problem persists, uninstall Access Connections (keep the install file) and use Windows to troubleshoot and make the connection. Then re-install Access Connections. If Windows can't get it working, there are other problems, and based on your description, it looks like there are more problems.

I use Access Connections 3.21 on my T41 with the IBM 11/a/b/g card and it works fine. ... JDHurst

I had this problem (same setup as yours) until I made sure that the wireless router's SSID and the one in the Access Connections profile matched. You might give that a try.

hey! i did fix the wmi corruption problem on the advanced settings tab in networking. i just restarted some services i cancelled :D. also my computer booted about twice as fast as normal. i have to ask your opinion:

in networking properties > advanced:
is it advisable to turn on internet connection firewall?
is it advisable to allow other network users to connect to the internet using this connection?

since these are settings under the wireless connection in my network places, and wireless zero configuration service is off, does it even pay to ponder on whether or not i should turn them on or off?

thanks,
l. s.

If you are using wireless in public locations (StarBucks), then you should have some sort of firewall. The one in Windoze gives minimal protection.

ZoneAlarm is free, and much more flexible / powerful. Why not use it!?
