Power manager driver questions

#1 Post by koolzero » Thu Aug 31, 2006 7:35 am

One of the end users I support has reported that he his T43p doesn't suspend correctly at times.

He told me he called IBM and they said that there is a problem with the Power Manager driver and that he needs to upgrade it. The version on the machines now is 1.01 This is the first time I've heard about any problems with a machine not suspending.

I am just wondering if it's true that this fixes major problems or was this IBM guy making this up.

My supervisor asks that I first recreate the problem before we implement any software upgrades because we have several hundred of these machines and he wants the image to stay as similar as possible. So far I can not recreate any problems.

Thanks for any info.

Have you checked what kind of software the user was running at the time? I can list off a few pieces of software that can prevent pretty much *any* T4X Series Thinkpad, or any laptop for that matter, from going into Suspend-to-RAM S3 Sleep state on Windows.

The Power Manager driver might be causing it, but it would be best to check what kind of software is running when the user wants to suspend and then look at the BIOS/EC revision as those are the things that, 95% of the time, affect the ability of a laptop to suspend.

I met someone who looks a lot like you.
She does the things you do.
But she is an IBM.

The user had Lotus Notes running at the time, which shouldn't be a problem. We have about 600 T43ps and I've maybe heard from 2 or 3 people that have had issues suspending and all of them are set to suspend when they close the lid.

If the user called IBM I wonder if they would have asked him if he was running something that prevented suspend or if they just say oh well your drivers are the problem you must install these.

These machines are built the same and the users are "not allowed" to install software that is not work related. These users are remote so it's difficult to enforce.

I think most likely it was just a random glitch.

A running video will not let the laptop go into Suspend. A program called Alcohol 120% is also reported to cause this problem.
