ASAP HD Help for College!

#1 Post by atct86 » Sat Sep 02, 2006 10:11 am

I go to college tommorrow, and my HD is grinding, and wont boot.

I am looking at Newegg for new 7200rpm 80gb HD's and dont know which would work in my laptop.

Can anyone tell me if its any of these?

get a model of the 7K100 that is NOT serial-ata. You need ATA-6.

do not get the E7K100 either, even though it works in notebooks, it has less power saving features as it`s intended for slim servers such as blade servers and those run 24/7.

on your link, the one on the very right would be the one to get.
IBM T42p 2373-GYG|14,1'' SXGA+|2.1 GHZ|2048MB RAM|160GB SAMSUNG HDD|1000Mbit LAN|Atheros W-Lan II a/b/g|BlueTooth|
- IBM Dock II
- Tucano Second Skin 14,1"

I bought a E7K100 for 71USD + Shipping here in Mexico. Produc was new and I'm using it as my primary HDD on my T42p without any problems. I don't care to much of Power Saving Features as my laptop stays most of the time plugged in my room. :P

ofcourse, as I wrote initially, it works.

still the E7K100 is not primarily intended for the use in notebooks, and if you compare the datasheets on the hitachi site for the E7K100 and the 7K100 you`ll notice that the difference is in power savings.

I never said the E7K100 does not work, did I? For the use in a _PORTABLE_ machine it`s just not the first choice.

I ordered the 7k100 from newegg. Should be here tommorrow.

My old 7k60 drive seems to be functionally dead. It spins up and makes grinding noises, and freezes at the windows scrolling startup thing.

Is there any way I can salvage the stuff in my documents, or even the entire drive? I am confused as what if any options I have.

install windows on the new drive and hook up the old one to the pc via the ultrabay2000 adaptor or via an external usb 2.0 casing

that way you might be able to access it (and some files on it)

The old drive may still be under warranty. Don't forget to check, you may wind up with a nice spare drive.
