T40 to T42p

#1 Post by jsteele » Thu Sep 07, 2006 9:44 am

I have two T40s and am thinking about selling one and buying a refurb T42p with 15" FlexView, mostly for the larger screen real estate. I was thinking about going to the T60p but I have a lot of accessories for the T40s, port replicator, second hard drive adapter, etc., that would also have to be replaced for the T60p.

I have upgraded my T40s to 100GB 7200RPM drives and 802.11a/b/g and anticipate simply transferring my drive and WLAN adapter to the T42p. I'm curious if there is anything about a change to T42p would cause a problem with this approach.

Thanks

The only problems I would see are drivers for the different hardware components.
T400 14.1" WXGA+ LCD / T9400 / 4GB / 160gb / ATi+Intel GFX / 9C / W7 64
T42p 14" SXGA+ / 2.0GHz / 1.5GB / 60GB / 2 x 6C / XP
T40 14" XGA / 1.7GHz / 1GB / 40GB / 9C / XP
T40 14" SXGA+ / 1.7GHz / 1GB / 40GB / 6C / XP

Thanks to all. I was concerned about some of the things I've been reading with the T43 and disk drives.

Opinion on moving to T42p?

#5 Post by jsteele » Tue Sep 12, 2006 10:04 am

As I said I'm considering switching from my current T40 (1440x1050 display) to a refurb (IBM warranty) T42p 15" (1600x1200).

I do a lot of software development work and I do not use a desktop machine at all --- in the office I have my T40 on a port replicator with a Dell 17" LCD (1280x1024). My primary interest is in the additional screen real estate. Since I carry this machine with me everywhere weight is a factor.

(I've considered the T60 but this means all new accessories, a change from PATA to SATA drives, new second drive adapter, etc. So I think I'll stick with the T4x. The T60's EVDO WWAN is the thing that would really move me to the T60 but I simply can't justify the significant rpice difference.)

I'd appreciate some thoughts on the question of:
- usability and legibility of the T42p's 1600x1200 screen versus the T40's 1440x1050 for development work in normal office and home conditions
- the weight and form factor differences between the T40 and the T42p
- the battery life difference (although this is not a critical item as the machine is only on battery when i'm at a client or travelling.)

Thanks

A further question on compatibility.

Having two T40 means I can simply swap the drive from one to the other and the second takes on the "personality" of the first T40.

If I go for the T42p will this same approach work? That is allow me to simply swap the T42p disk to the T40 (allowing for boot time adjustments for driver differences etc)? If the fingerprint reader is in use on the T42p what would happen if I put the T42p drive in the T40 ?
