USB lock up problem

#1 Post by pavel168 » Fri Sep 08, 2006 3:44 pm

Hello, mighty All!

Hope you can help me handle my little big problem. It differs from what I've found on this forum so far, but I apologize if there was already a thread on my issue that I just couldn't find.

Here's the issue: I can only start WinXP SP2 with ANY device attached to my T40. If I try starting it without the device (no matter what it is - mouse, keyboard, ext.HDD) it locks up a minute after start (at the point some particular service starts, I guess).

Reinstalling the operating system doesn't help much, the issue stays. I know what you're about to say: "USB hardware fault, change your motherboard". I'd agree with that taking into account various previous posts on the similar topic, but...

...If I start WinXP in Safe Mode, everything works fine with or without USB devices attached. Nothing hangs, life's perfect, both USB1.1 and USB2.0 devices live happily. How can this be, any ideas? usbohci, usbehci and similar drivers are all loaded in the Safe Mode (according to the log file), so my guess it might be some service that runs in Normal Mode, and doesn't run in Safe Mode. Maybe I just can't localize it?

PS. I don't think it is connected to the issue, but anyway: I've changed my memory recently (both memory blocks). That was approximately the same time the issue started.
