Sudden crashes - video card problem?

On my t42 I am encountering crashes when running on battery.

1 - 2min after switching on battery power, computer freezes and after cca 10 sec I am getting striped (vertical black and white stripes) screen.

I switched battery, but symptoms are the same...

What is most likely source of that problem?

It seem likre your video chip is toasted. If that is the case a motherboard replacement is the only option.
Why don't you first back up all your data and the reinstall XP and give it a try, you got nothing to loose.
