System refreshing itself? Mysterious pointer click sound????

#1 Post by skitty4gzus » Sun Sep 10, 2006 2:07 pm

during any application the system makes this pointer clicking sound as if its refreshing something? It sounds like a pointer click but i am definitely not clicking anything. It is most frustrating when listening to music, but it does it all the time at about 30 second intervals or so. What is this and why is this? Can anybody help me?

Maybe there's some spyware/adware on your machine.

Some options to fix your problem:

1. Install antispyware software and do a full check on your HDD.
2. Delete/set Windows not to playback the Default Sounds.
3. Check if there are instances of Iexplore running, suggesting spyware/adware

Try opening the task manager and watching to see what task increases CPU usage at the same intervals as the clicking sounds.

It does sound like spyware, or a homepage, like CNN, that updates automatically.

If this is the pointer click I am thinking of, such as the sound IE makes opening a new web page, then you have some background process running that is using IE modules and dlls to access and navigate through some website whilst not displaying it. I have heard that sound on various systems, but it is nearly always indicative of just such a task running iexplorer as a process (as has been mentioned already).

I, too, would recommend a spyware scan and check. Bring up the Task Manager, do you see any strange processes running?

hey that seemed to be it. I did a scan and it found quite a few tracking cookies and i deleted them all. I havent heard that in a lil bit now. Thanks a lot guys. I prolly should have been able to figure that out by myself as i figured it was a virus or something like that.
