T43

#1 Post by Antioch » Fri Aug 20, 2004 12:21 pm

Does anyone know when the T43s may come out? Im debating whether or not I should buy a T42 now, or wait for T43.

Now's a good time to buy a T42. The prices have fallen dramatically, but the technology is still up to date. The product has been out for a while so you can get impressions, reviews, and know the advantages and pitfalls of the machine (versus Lust At First Sight impressions of new tech in early reviews for new systems). Unless there's a specific feature foreseen as an absolute must have on the T43, you might as well buy now... or you could be waiting forever.

Google "IBM T43" returns NOTHING. IBM hasn't even decided they're making anything call T43 (Unless you happen to have your ears attached to the grape vine :-))
IBM X31 (2672-268)

Oh, theres nothing in specific Im waiting for. Just the usual wants, lol - faster processor, better graphics card, etc. But then, new things always come out. Lol.

I guess the one real thing I would want is a faster DVDRW drive. Does IBM release new slimdrives and sell them individually? Because if they did, upgrading the drive alone would be a snap.

You can always wait for Sonoma (Dothan processor
paired with the new Alviso chip set). Sonoma has
been delayed though, but supposedly will have better audio,
video power management, and new wireless. If your
really patient you can wait for 64-bit mobile chips. Intel
just released processors with 64-bit extensions. Who
knows when 64-bit will be mainstream, let alone
available on a mobile laptop as good as the the current
T42 with Dothan Pentium M. In this industry you'll never
buy anything if you wait for the lastest and greatest. I'm
tired of waiting and ordered a DXU.

Another point I forgot to mention is that Thinkpads deprecitate really well. That means you can use your T42 for one or two years then sell it on eBay for a good amount towards your next Thinkpad (IBM has their own buy back program, but it's usually only worth it for really old machines).

First quarter of next year (January 2005 at earliest) is my best guess. That's when the new Intel chipset, codenamed "Alviso" is slated to launch. Someone above has already mentioned the new features of the chipset.

IBM generally introduces a new revision of machine when a new technology becomes available or the chipset platform changes. Aside from some minor speed bumps to the Dothan Pentium M, Intel isn't planning any platform changes for the rest of the year.
