T42p Keyboard flexing??

#1 Post by agarza » Tue Sep 12, 2006 1:30 pm

I've opened about 5-6 times my Thinkpad to check/apply AS5 thermal compound.

But I've noticed that after I put in place all the screws, the keyboard flexes in the arrow keys (lower right side) and when pressing the Fn key. Also when pressing the Enter Key, I feel like there's something loose because I can hear a sound.

Is this normal or does that keys have that defect??

Depends on how much it flexes. If it is alot and you can hear a definite *clanking noise*, then it is not normal. If it is a minor bit with no or very little "squeak", then it is pretty much OK. :)

I opened again my T42p and pulled the keyboard to myself, then tightened again the screws and the sound is gone, guess the edge of the keyboard have to be touching the edge of the palmrest in order to be sitted tightly, however IBM should've put another screw on the right side where the arrow keys are in order to be more firm the keyboard.

Oh I don't know about putting another screw there; having the ultrabay, and therefore any and all UltraBay Slim devices, cut under that exact portion a little would tend to preclude just such an engineering option, don't you think? ;) :)

My navigation keys and arrows make a curious sound when I press on them. Also when I press the right Shift. I wish the keyboard were more tightened.

For example, please a T40P/T41P/T42p USER do this:

Press the down arrow key real hard:
Do you see the keys surrounding it move up & down as you stroke it??

Another test:
Press the palmrest area just under the right Ctrl key. Does it flexes???

Also, can you see the edges of the keyboard on the right side below? I cant make the keyboard to snap into the palmrest.

Anyway to prevent this flexing?

Suggestions to remove the right flexing?

How can I make the right side of the palmrest sit firmly without flexing (specially under the are of the right Alt & Ctrl keys) That flexing makes typing the arrow keys, enter and right shift to make a strange sound and an awkaward sensation, never felt on a Thinkpad

IIRC I read about people placing business cards (maybe 2-4 cards thick - depending on how firm you wanted it) under the problem areas of the keyboard. You can always try that simple fix.

This was what I was going to suggest. There had been a lot of posts abou this and placing a business card seem to be the simplest solution so far.

Let us know how it goes.

Ok. Thanks for the advice.

I need to remove the keyboard only and the palmrest to, or could I just slip through the credit cards on the affected areas??

I might do that a couple of days more, since I'm busy. Will post my results.

Credit cards? :P

IMO the palmrest doesn't need to be removed, only the keyboard. Remember to try to stack with different #s of business cards to the stiffness of your liking.

Ok, but I've noticed that the right side of the palmrest is like bent or something, because it's elevated and if you press against it, it will make a sound making contact with the keyboard edges.

I'm not turning Off my laptop right now, but I'll in a couple of days.
So I'll just remove the keyboard.

Any stories of people doing this trick and being happy with the results?
