Tryting to decide between T41, T42 or T43
Tryting to decide between T41, T42 or T43
I am upgrading from a T30. I am looking at the above and trying to decide between the 3. I just bought a new T43 with a 15" XGA screen but my girlfriend ended up with it plus I didn't like the 15" XGA screen so I am searching for one of the above with a 14" SVGA+ screen. How big is the difference between the regular T's and the P's with the different video card? I don't do any graphic intensive work? Just a work computer and for surfing. I just want something slimmer than the T30. Otherwise the T30 works awesome. Also I am having a hard time comparing the SVGA+ screen and the XGA screen. As I said I did not like the XGA screen in the 15" but my 14"XGA on my T30 is ok. The 15" XGA was just not bright enough. Just looking for someone with experience with the T4x's above.
Thanks
Huck

Re: Tryting to decide between T41, T42 or T43
If that's the case, I would recommend the T40. T40 through T43 all have the same thickness, but the T40 is the lightest. More importantly, for surfing and standard office applications, T40 offers more than enough power, so there's no need to spend more money to get additional features that you don't need.huck wrote:I don't do any graphic intensive work? Get the best deal available. Usually if you do not need a lot of power, the T40, T41 should satisfy you, but please ask yourself how much time you'll be keeping the new machine.

I usually only keep a thinkpad around a year and then get an itch to upgrade. My T30 does just fine I just want the slimmer T4x series. I do want built in g wireless and I can take or leave bluetooth. I think I do want for sure the SXGA+ screen. I definitely wouldn't take advantage of the faster processor's. I do want something that runs cooler than my T30 as it gets pretty hot in your lap. I have found T40's for around $500 -$600 and T41's for a little under $700. How does this sound?

P's have shorter battery life due to better performance. P's run much hotter, esp. T41p's - ouch!
Prices look right, but don't forget T40, T41 & T42 models overlapped a lot. A T40 with 1.6 Pentium M, BT, wifi, hi-res., etc. may/should cost more than a T42 with 1.5 Pentium M.
Some T42's didn't even have a Dothan processor! Take a look at these models - 2373-1UU, 2373-1YU, 2373-1WU - they have basic T40 specs. w/Banias CPU's.
Remaining warranty - which can be extended - is always nice to have, too.
Good luck.

My T30 with properly applied Arctic Silver 5 runs very cool, it maxes 52C before the fan kicks in.
I noticed that if you apply AS5 correctly, you can have a very quiet laptop. Pentium 4 may not undervolt as Pentium M's, but when the fan kicks in, all the heat is dissipated quickly and after 5 min the fan is off again.
Look at the options and choose what's best for you.

Any T40/T41/T2 would suit you just fine...
Just don't get the T43... it's got the worst of everything:
-the infamous PATA-SATA hardware adapter that makes it very difficult to upgrade a non-IBM/Lenovo hard drive.
-no S-Video output
-The Product Recovery CD's don't work properly as don't recognize the PATA-SATA hardware adapter!

The first statement is true if you want to remove the 2010 warning, but the last two are not.w0qj wrote:Just don't get the T43... it's got the worst of everything:

My T43 has S-video out as well as all the T4x models. I think it is the T60 series that does not have S-Video out.
I have had no problems with the Product Recovery CD that I've made. It recognizes the PATA-SATA hardware adapter just fine.

I didn't know the T43 used a SATA HDD?
What's the best T4xx in terms of heating?
I believe the T60 doesn't have the S-Video port which kinda sucks.
To me the T4xx are the best Thinkpads ever. I don't like the redesigned change Thinkpads suffered after Lenovo took over IBM.

No, T43s use a PATA hard drive, but has a SATA interface, thus, the use of the PATA-SATA bridge. The problems and workarounds are documented here:benottomex wrote:I didn't know the T43 used a SATA HDD?
