t42 2378-fzu hdd upgrade?

#1 Post by Facetious_Nickname » Fri Sep 15, 2006 12:54 am

If hard drive upgrade questions have not been utterly beaten to death, I would appreciate some advice. :D Right now I've got the standard 5400rpm 40Gb Hitachi ATA-6 in my T42 (2378-fzu). I'd like to throw in an aftermarket 7200rpm drive. Power consumption means nothing to me, I just want a fast drive.

Will this work? (I am assuming, perhaps wrongly, that I will not be subject to the 2010 error). And if so, what would you recommend?

Thanks, all.

I bought a Hitachi TravelStar E7K100 Series 60GB HDD @ 7200rpm for my T42p. I didn't get the 2010 error.

I recommend you to buy the Hitachi TravelStar 7K100 (not like mine) because it saves more power, as my drive is intended for server applications [didn't know about that when I bought it, but still a great drive]. Also the operational working temp of the 7K100 vs E7K100 is higher.

You should have no worries with Hitachi HDD, and in case you do, there's a guide around here, which helps you flash the firmware of the new drive in order to make it work with your renuent Thinkpad.

Cheers.

The 2010 error is strictly a T43 problem - so yes, your T42 will be fine with a 3rd party HDD upgrade. I just upgraded my T42 with a Seagate Momentus 5400.3 (160GB) with no problems. I needed drive space over performance, personally, but a 7200RPM drive will be fine. Just make sure you buy a PATA drive instead of a SATA drive.

Thanks! This is exactly what I needed to know -

Just as a side note; the 2010 isn't strictly a T43 problem.

The models it can appear on include the T43, R52 as it uses the same planar/motherboard that the T43 does, and the X41 since it uses a SATA-PATA bridge with a SATA controller and a PATA HDD along with the same special IBM/Lenovo firmware. :)

Thanks for the clarification - I guess I'm a bit blinded to anything non-T4x related...
