Will this work? (I am assuming, perhaps wrongly, that I will not be subject to the 2010 error). And if so, what would you recommend?
Thanks, all.

Thanks! This is exactly what I needed to know -John Kua wrote:The 2010 error is strictly a T43 problem - so yes, your T42 will be fine with a 3rd party HDD upgrade. I just upgraded my T42 with a Seagate Momentus 5400.3 (160GB) with no problems. I needed drive space over performance, personally, but a 7200RPM drive will be fine. Just make sure you buy a PATA drive instead of a SATA drive.
Thanks for the clarification - I guess I'm a bit blinded to anything non-T4x related...christopher_wolf wrote:Just as a side note; the 2010 isn't strictly a T43 problem.
The models it can appear on include the T43, R52 as it uses the same planar/motherboard that the T43 does, and the X41 since it uses a SATA-PATA bridge with a SATA controller and a PATA HDD along with the same special IBM/Lenovo firmware.
