New Thinkpad Questions

#1 Post by Udayan » Sat Aug 21, 2004 5:21 pm

After months of waiting and deciding, I ended up getting a refursbished 2373geu t41p (so therefore a 2373xtx) instead of the 2373ktu t42p (reasons at bottom). So now I have a few questions (some general, some specific).

1. I have 1GB of RAM and still use about a 200MB page file. I think this is due to the IBM applications running, so here's what I have installed and the questions I have about them:
a) Battery MaxiMiser Wizard -- is there a better way to throttle CPU when on battery. In other words, is there a better way to manage battery life.
b) EasyEject Utility -- I have a port replicator, but do I really need this?
c) IBM Access Connections -- I have the a/b/g wireless adapter w/ bluetooth. Is this essential for it to work? If not, does it offer specific advantages.
d) IBM Access Support -- should I keep it?
e) Thinkpad Software Installer -- same as d)
f) IBM Update Connector -- It seems to think I have a T40/T40p and downloads that particular BIOS. Anyone else run into this problem? How can I fix it? If it's easier to download directly from IBM, let me know.
g) Thinkpad Configuration -- same as d)
h) UltraNav Wizard -- same as d)

That about does it for now. I just realized this is one giant software question. Sorry. :)

Thanks for the help.

Reasoning:
I decided I really don't need the power of a $3200+ system as much as I wanted it, so I bought a refurbished and then used 2373geu w/ 1gb of ram and a port replicator for $1900. Less stress carrying around $1900 instead of $3200. Next year might be a different story w/ the cooler/more revolutionary/more worth it Sonoma/Alviso. If you've reached the end of this post, thanks for putting up with it.

The IBM utilities are all optional. Windows XP can handle power management and wireless connection without the IBM utilites. It's just a matter of personal preference. The advantage of the Battery MaxiMiser Wizard is that you can create your own profiles and set the CPU speed. I don't think the Windows utility allows you to set CPU speed. The advantage of Access Connections is that you can easily switch IP addresses when moving from network to network. With the Windows utility, you have the change the IP address manually. I don't use the IBM Update Connector or IBM Access Support. The EasyEject Utility doesn't really do anything for me either since I always turn off the computer before removing it from the dock.

Here's are my dislikes (I'm not using them):

1. Access Connections for managing WiFi (I hate it, I use the Atheros Client Utility)
2. Software Update (forget it, the downloads take forever)

I kept the following because I like them:
1. Battery Maximizer (like above, I use the profiles)
2. Active HD Protection
3. Thinkpad Configuration (gives you info about your Thinkapd)

I kept the following because I think they maybe useful:
A. Trackpoint / UltraNAV stuff
B. Presentation Director
C. Software Installer (much better than Update connector, but I'll probably never use it)
D. Acess Support (who knows maybe it'll be useful one day)
E. Keyboard customizer

I'll probably get rid of these.
EZ Eject? UNav Wizard?
