External Hard drive

I'm looking to buy an external hard drive to back up my computer. I noticed that some hard drives come with software for backing up, do I need this? Or does my T42 with Rescue and Recovery take care of this?
Any suggestions?

Any USB 2.0 HDD will do ...

I'm a fan of what you find here: Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Backup
