I am trying to install Windows Vista RC1 on my old T40P but the setup is terminating the installation process after an hour with a "system failure". Now I wonder if the download + DVD burned is damaged or if the machine is simply not ready for Vista.
Has anyone succeeded in installing Vista on an old T40P?
And if yes, is there a chance to get the Aero stuff working with the FireGL 9000?
I don't care if it's slow, since I'm using this machine for testing only.

Have you try running the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor? It will tell you what your hardware limitations are.

I don't have a T40p, but I've just installed Vista RC1 on a T41p and it seems to be running okay, including the Aero interface. The T41p has the 128MB FireGL T2.

There is no reason it shouldn't run. You may or may not get Aero depending on the card. I have seen it running on Intel 950 cards just fine sans Aero. I also have had it working on my T42 quite well. I personally found Aero annoy as it sometimes made things hard to read. To each his/her own I guess. Good Luck.

I had no major difficulties installing Vista on my T40p. In fact, I've done the install about five times now, using both a pressed DVD from Microsoft, and the download-and-burn RC1 image. The FireGL 9000 doesn't have enough memory to deliver the full Aero Glass experience at SXGA+, but the basic UI stuff, minus the transparency effects, are there.
My main issue with Vista is a weird audio glitch. I do some sound recording using a nice USB condenser mic (Samson C01U), which produces wonderfully clean audio under XP. In every build of Vista I've tried, however, the sound is consistently overdriven and distorted.
