T43 board in an T40. What are the complications?

#1 Post by lithium726 » Sun Sep 24, 2006 4:28 pm

I know it supposedily will not fit in stock form, why? Is it an easy modification to get it to fit? I want a board with DX9 and the T42/mr9600 boards are hard to come by..

Totally different electronics between T40 and T43. Forget it.

One complication that would manifest itself as a physical incompatibility would be the difference between the PC Card Express+PCMCIA slots that go with the T43 planar and the two physical slots on the T40 chassis innards. One would have a hard time fitting these two together.

It is doable, but it requires a large amount of work for a variable amount of gain.

Not true; it will fit perfectly. The only part which is specific to the T43 board is the PC Card Slot, and it is available and easily obtainable.

The effort required is exactly the same as the effort required to change a motherboard in any T4x Thinkpad -- not one extra step, not one extra screw.

However, Christopher's point is the key: Is the pain/reward ratio small enough to justify the action? I believe not. On the other hand, some folks seek such adventures, much less think of them as painful. If that is the case with you, then enjoy it -- there are no elephant traps; you won't encounter any surprises.

Not true. Theyre exatly the same electrically, its the T60 that is different.

Definatly not afraid of swapping boards. So, am I going to have to work on the chassis to get the thing to fit perfectly (in regards to how the PCMCIA/PCIE unit goes in) or just get that part to go along with the board?

Couple reasons I want do do this. First, I want a DX9 chip. Second, I want a faster processor, and I would rather pinmod my current 1.7 to 2.26/533 than buy a 2.1/400, which are very pricey. I would like to know what im getting myself into first though.

I did notice in pictures that the x300 is in the same packaging as my MR7500 (as opposed to the 9600 in teh T42, that was a flipchip)... does it require cooling, or is it a passive chip?

Admin Edit - Minor transgression, but please do keep it civil.

It cannot be made to fit; the connector which attaches the card cage to the motherboard is totally different. You must get the new card cage.

yeah... I know... I was asking if the new cage would have any issues fitting.

sorry, that was worded really badly. I think i got lost in thought and wrote down the wrong thing.

Once the new cage is attached to the new motherboard, the entire assembly will fit perfectly in the place of the old assembly.

excellent. Now, will I need a new cooling assembly (I have the short unit) to cool the video card, or is it passive like my MR7500? I figured I would have to cool it, but it is in the same package as my MR7500 so now I am not sure.

It would be great if you'd get a chance to post some close-up pictures of the board.

If I decide to go for it, ill take some pics for you guys. Just have to worry about securing the slots, RAM, and the cooling unit (?). I might just hold out for a T60/1 around early next year with Vista and such.

I just might. Santa Rosa should be sweet, and *maybe,* just maybe, ATI will have a mobile DX10 GPU ready for the Vista launch.

/wishful thinking

Maybe Ill just get a PM 755 in the meantime. Get some RAM cheap from a buddy of mine and the extra clock should help the encoding I do.

Benefits upgrading from a T41p to a T42P motherboard? Maybe replacing it to a T43p motherboard.

Is it easy to pinmod a 1.8 Dothan FSB 400 to run in a T43p motherboard with 533 FSB?
