My T42 motherboard dead, but is T40 motherboard compatible?

#1 Post by dracore » Tue Sep 26, 2006 10:13 pm

Aurgh my T42 decided to stop powering up. With only 1 yr warranty, my system dies in 2. I'm now out of warranty and with no chance for getting out-of-warranty extension.

It looks like the motherboard is dead. Laptop won't boot off AC nor off a fully charged battery. LED indicators in the front do not light up. I guess my only option is to find a board replacement. I've been reading that a T40 would be compatible and I went searching on eBay. The thing that I'm not sure about is that for the T40 it says that it includes a 9-pin serial port. My T42 doesn't come with that.. only parallel.

So the question is... can I replace my T42 with a T40?

And I'd like to move my 1.7GHz processor into the T40 which I think should be possible since that board has a 400Mhz FSB

thanks.

I'm unsure about the serial port.

If you found some boards on ebay, ask the seller if the mobo would fit the t42 chassis.

I think your T42 memory will only run @ 266MHz (PC2100)

I called IBM Canada and they said post-warranty was not possible through them and they offered the only two options:

1. Purchase the part directly from IBM - $741CAD
2. Go through a service center.. which would probably cost an arm or a leg

I wonder if Lenovo is any different though?

Ok I have finally figured out the riddle.

Yes there is post-warranty but you MUST contact Lenovo. If you contact IBM... well, they can spew out false information (like what they did to me) since they don't really support Thinkpad anymore.

So, what I got from them was that post-warranty is possible. Application for post-warranty can get rejected if you have any outstanding open issues on your notebook. Otherwise here is the breakdown in price:

1 yr -
Mail-in/drop off at depot - $169USD
On-site business day service - $199USD

2yr -
Mail-in/drop off at depot - $320USD
Next business day service On-site - Can't remember.. but probably $370

Unfortunately, these prices did not apply to me since I'm from Canada and the whole time I was speaking to the US Lenovo and when I realized they could not help me (they only help US clients), I asked them to forward me to the Canada site, only to find myself back in the US side again. Telephone tagged in circles for quite a while and FINALLY I got to someone in Canada who could sign me up for post-warranty. Prices are as follows:

1 yr -
Mail-in/drop off at depot - $179CAD
On-site business day service - $224CAD

Glad that they have post-warranty :) I had unfortunately purchased the T40 replacement board off eBay and paid too early... I now have extra T40 parts being shipped to me :-\ sigh.. maybe I'll build myself a T40 or something....
