Windows Key?!?!

#1 Post by surgex » Wed Sep 27, 2006 3:48 pm

This is my first IBM, so far I love it. The only complaint that I have is that the windows key is missing. It seems to be this way on all the ibm laptops that I have used. Is there another shortcut combo to use or did ibm designate another key as the windows key? Biggest complaint is not being able to bring up explorer this way. windows key + e.

Download and install the Keyboard Customiser Utility if you don't have it already. With it, you can assign a key such as the right Alt key to become the Windows key. Look for the program on your ThinkPad at either: Start > All Programs > Access IBM > Keyboard Customiser Utility, or Start > All Progams > ThinkVantage > Keyboard Customiser Utility. If you don't have it, you will find the download on the following page.

I use & recommend Qliner's Hotkeys, which remaps that large, seldom used, CapsLock key into a Windows key.

The IBM utility is inconvenient for me since I customarily use both alt keys for Excel commands.

Qliner is open source freeware. Check it out at:

I use KeyTweak freeware (donationware) which makes changes to your Windows Registery. It uses no computer resources--in fact, you can uninstall it after you're done.

I also don't use IBM/Lenovo's Keyboard Customise Utility (KCU), because i find it resource intensive, and also it doesn't work right after you've booted into Windows (it's still loading other programs like KCU), which was very annoying for me...
