T40p: WLAN Problems - Connection yes, but no traffic - HELP!

#1 Post by Sebbot » Thu Sep 28, 2006 5:22 am

Hi,

first of all I would like to pay you a compliment. This community seems to be very peaceful and everybody is so patient.. I like that.

To my problem.

Router: DLink DI-624+
Thinkpad: T40p 2373 G1G, WIN XP SP2.

My Thinkpad recognizes the router and my WLAN and sometimes also connects to it, but no data is received by the Thinkpad. That means that the icon in the tray bar shows a connection, but it won't work and there is no connection to the internet.

I use AccessConnections (which I installed with WIN XP using the Recovery CDs some weeks ago), it says that no IP address is assigned. Although the WLAN signal seems to reach the computer, it is between 60 and 75 percent. So it can't be a problem with the signal.

Do I maybe have to change something in the settings of my router? I read something about a static IP address I might need to set up using the MAC address.. Regrettably I have no clue what exactly I have to change in the settings.

I have two other computers that don't have any problems connecting to the internet via the router.
Settings with the router are: Automatic IP generation, WEP, open. These settings work well with the other computers.
Firewall is switched off.

Thanks in advance for some help!

Cheers

Sebastian

You say that other computers can connect to the router and send and receive from the Internet, so that means that the router is working. The settings you describe (Automatic IP and WEP) are fine.

Check your ThinkPad settings in Access Connections. Make sure that IP is automatic (DHCP) - you don't need to go static and that can just confuse things. Make sure you set the wireless security for WEP and put in the correct WEP key from the router. Make sure you put the SSID from the router into the wireless security settings for Access Connections.

If MAC Address Filtering is enabled in the router, then add the Thinkpad's wireless adapter's MAC address to the router's list of permitted MACs.

@ jdhurst: The SSID of my WLAN is correctly adjusted in AccessConnection's settings, it's name is unique and I have only two other WLANs in my neigborhood. Also the key is correct - it is WEP (128 bit) with 13 characters which I know by heart (and I use the same key for the other computers and it works there).

@ EOMtp: I will have a look at the settings of the router, maybe I can make some settings there that will make it work.

Thanks for your help so far!

Hi

there's small chance you put wrong WEP key to connection setting.
most people just put text WEP key instead hexadecimal WEP key.
the other small chance is that you have problem with IP conflict(saw that few times) so just put static IP address.
but If I were you I'd back to basic and setup all from begining.

I just ripped out yet another D-Link router this afternoon. It worked poorly (exceedingly poorly) on the client's HP laptop, and not at all for my ThinkPad with Access Connections (which I am using happily on my Netopia wireless router this very instant). Every D-Link I have serviced has had to be taken out of service and replaced with LinkSys or Netopia. Just a consideration for you. ... JD Hurst

wireless zero config in the "services" part of your system is often the problem... do a google on this, and see if the symptoms match. i had the same problem, and just switching the lousy thing off worked for me. someone wanna explain why MS is not bankrupt?

I have seen this solution is other forums as well. Yet, on my T41 where I have wireless and have Netstumbler running, Netstumbler always turns of wireless zero config first. It seems to be always running in normal circumstances and not causing any problems. Still if switching it off works, then be all means do so. ... JD Hurst

jvoth's suggestion to google "wireless zero config" fitted: After I found the German equivalent ("Konfigurationsfreie drahtlose Verbindung") I switched it off and after rebooting I finally got Internet access.

Thanks to all of you for helping me solve the problem!

I have to say this sounds exactly like what happened to me after installing the Latest Rescue and Recovery (v3.1) - don't suppose you had just installed this?

@ Paranoid_TP_User:

No, I bought a second hand TP with Linux installed. Since I don't want Linux, I ordered the Recovery CDs, cleared the HD and reinstalled WIN XP PRO (had to do that because the Hidden Partition was deleted by the first owner). The problem with the WiFi appeared from the first time I booted.
