Flash Drive with my T43

#1 Post by xchaotic » Fri Sep 29, 2006 2:45 am

I was considering HDD upgrade for a while, now I see more and more companies ship their lapotps with flash-based drives.
What I want to do is to replace my existing 2.5" drive with flash based one (32GB would be enough) and replace the DVD burner with an ultrabay additional battery.
The power savings on removed DVD and more power efficient "HD" + the extra battery life should yield me around 8hrs on battery which is a workday and good enough for me.
Now I see several problems already:
-first and foremost flash memory is still expensive in such quantities (on the other hand I've noticed that single 32GB flash cards are already available)
-2010 error that pops up when upgrading HDDwill probably be obstacle for me too

Do you think it's worthy of exploring already or should I just wait until it becomes less expensive and more popular?

I'd suggest option 2. Let early adopters explore and discover the problems inherent in such a situation. Since you mention price, you're thinking about it and, unless I'm mistaken, your idea is far more expensive than just getting a 9-cell and an Ultrabay Slim battery.

I have a 9-cell, 6-cell, and 3 cute little Ultrabay Slim batteries, and can run all day with them. Trick is, if you drain both main batteries, how do you recharge both without getting up during the dog watch to swap out? In my case, I don't use all of them daily.

Maybe not a practical alternative for you, but I've always bought extra chargers for my laptops: one for home, one for work, one for travel. Usually one more than I "need," but I dislike having to untangle a home office charger just to go out. (With self-powered docking stations, this point is moot.) Thinkpad chargers are considerably cheaper than batteries, at retail prices. You also can max out performance without compromising on run-time.
