Palm heat solution for T, R series

#1 Post by hancerm » Mon Aug 23, 2004 6:12 pm

If you are unhappy with your laptop because of the heat under your right palm. Here is my solution. I figured as long as the harddrive is under the right palm, there will be some heat over there. So my solution for that was to open the palm rest, take an aluminum folio and fold it once or twice then put under the palm rest carefully. No more heat now. It is not a difficult task. You can watch a movie about opening the palmrest at ibm's support site.

I would *not* do that.

On my T41 with 60Gb 7200-rpm drive, the right palmrest is the same temperature as the surrounding air and laptop. The only time there is a hint of warmth is when I am defragmenting the drive.

Now, to the extent the hard drive is producing heat, putting aluminum foil over top of it will relect the heat back down into the drive and trap it (heat rises). This has the potential of setting up an undesirable heating cycle.

You will want to check your hard drive frequently for excess heat.

I would agree, i would not try that solution. It would cause excess heat in the HD area and increase the chances of failure and shortening of its life. I would rather deal with a bit of heat than kick out a couple hundred bucks for a new drive.

To solve any heat problems with my T42 thinkpad I make
sure I have a good supply of "Pralines and Cream" before I
been to work.

I love that stuff.
