noisy older T41 fan

#1 Post by Benjlv » Sun Oct 01, 2006 10:48 pm

I have a used T41 that is a few years old now and have noticed that the fan makes a slightly annoying wirrring noise. Now my friends with a T42 and a X60 do not have this issue. Infact I would say their machines are basically dead quiet although the X60 appears to throw more heat...it just pushes it out in silence.

I run NHC with a lower CPU voltage and am content with how cool my temps are and how often the fan runs. I am wondering though if anyone else has had a similiar issue with a older system having a noisy fan. I am wondering if i can clean it or replace it to get it quieter.

BTW i have searched on the issue and it is a long heatsink in this machine.

Hi.

Yes, somethimes the fans wear out and become noisy. You can either replace it (used pieces in good shape are around 10-15USD in eBAY), or open it up and add a few drops of oil...

You can look for it yourself use the search option.

Good luck!

I had a fan noise problem with T41. Couple of things that I learned when I sent it out for warranty service.

Embedded Controller 3.04 tries to make fan quieter.

For past year IBM uses a quieter fan replacement part for T41

Hi, it was myself. The original thread is in the following linky :

Just note if you are going to do so, that it may be better to choose another lubricant... more designed for long term machinery maintenance..

Thanks for that "oil up your fan" guide

Tried it - and it woks perfectly :D

Now the noise is like when it was new - almost not audible when running at the low speeds.
