Rescue and Recovery backup is larger than used space

#1 Post by paras » Mon Oct 02, 2006 12:36 pm

Hello, hoping someone can help me figure out what is going on. I just upgraded to the most current Rescue and Recovery 3 on my T43. I have 20gb used space out of 60gb. My usual backup routine would be to exclude 15gb of media files from that 20gb, backing up only windows and installed programs. So basically I only want to backup 5gb but after the backup procedure I end up with a 10gb backup. Im not 100% sure but I think this only started happening when I upgraded to the new version of R&R. My usual backups were only 5-6gb.

Since its on the same same subject.. is there a better option for backing up to hd and DVD+RWs? I really like R&R since I can boot into it even if windows is messed up, integrated with the hidden partition etc. but it lacks a lot of options. Whats a good backup software thats similar to R&R but can do incremental backups? Any help would be appreciated.

I am partial to StompSoft Backup MyPC (version 6) myself. It backs up to DVD's over twice as fast as Rescue and Recovery did for me. This even includes a verify, which Rescue and Recovery did not do.

It looks like it is called PC Backup (version 7.3.1.2) now.

If you're interested in backing up user data, I just back up my data to an external USB hard drive... because your personal data is always changing, this may be your best solution (and you can take your data with you when you're on the road...)

I use R&R v3.01 to image my hard disk for just my OS + Patches + any regularly used programs. Then, just copy your user data back to your computer!

[Edit: R&R v3.1x is a pig from what i've heard, and (surprise) it's incompatable with hard disk images made from earlier R&R versions. Just glad I did not install v3.1x and checked this great Thinkpads forum!]

No offence, but the very first mistake being made here is saving a backup onto the same drive the original data is being stored. That's like putting that spare set of car keys in the glove box of your car, just in case you lose your keys and can't get in. Do yourself a favour and dump that R&R onto a USB or a network drive and then you won't worry about size and you will actually have a real backup!
