T42 Standby Resume VERY Slow, Bluetooth

#1 Post by aristotle1 » Tue Aug 24, 2004 1:58 am

Hi! I have a new T42 1.7GHz Dotham 512MB. Great machine, except it resumes from standby very slowly (and I use standby 15 times a day). My family also has an X31 and a R32 and R50, and all of them come out of standby much more quickly.

The problem is not that the screen is slow to appear on the T42. When I hit the button to come out of standby, I see the screen just as quickly on my T42 as on the other thinkpads. The difference is that the T42 takes an extra 5 seconds to allow me to use the mouse or keyboard. So I can only look at the screen, but I cannot type or use the mouse. What might be causing this?

Also, I think IBM forgot to include my integrated bluetooth. It has the bluetooth emblem on the LCD, but when I try to install the bluetooth software it says I have no bluetooth (I cannot find it under device manager either).

Thanks for your help! -Sean

Try a search for Bootvis, it's an (unsupported) Microsoft tool that optimizes your boot, standby, and hibernate performance.

Hi,
For the Bluetooth, you'll need to use Fn+F5 to activate it.
Also make sure you get the latest driver from www.tpdrivers.com and follow the instructions TO THE LETTER - ie choose the NON SIGNED driver. Otherwise it wont work properly.

Thanks for the advice. Bluetooth is working fine now, but the standby resume time is still the same after trying BootVis. Any other ideas? -Sean

I've noticed that BootVis says my resume time is 1.6 seconds, which is pretty good if I could actually use my keyboard or mouse after 1.6 seconds. BootVis does not seem to optimize for when I can use my keyboard and mouse, which is another 5 seconds later. What I don't understand is why the other thinkpads don't have this extra 5 seconds.

When coming out of standby, my T42 takes almost 2 seconds from the time I can see the desktop till the mouse will respond.
Have you tried disabling things to see if anything makes a difference? Like wireless/bluetooth? (are u using access connections?)

Actually, I had just tried disabling the touchpad and rebooting. With the touchpad disabled, I can use the keyboard and mouse instantly when resuming from standby (of course, I can only use the eraser thing for a mouse). I guess the computer takes a while to resume the two separate mouse inputs. I'll try diabling some of the touchpad software and see if that makes a difference when both mouse inputs are enabled.

PS - I tried disabling everything that can be disabled, but nothing other then disabling the touchpad has made a difference.

To speed up standby resume, I tried disabling just the trackpoint, and all the extra trackpad software, but leaving the trackpad on always made resuming from standby slow. The only thing that speeds resume back to normal speeds is to disable the trackpad and just use the trackpoint (the eraser thingy).
