Small smudge appeared on screen

#1 Post by raabjerg » Thu Oct 05, 2006 4:09 pm

Hello,

Recently, the screen on my T41p has suffered a small "smudge" near the left edge on the screen, 3/4 down from the top.

It's hard to describe exactly what it looks like, but we are not talking about dead pixels. It's more like a shade or cloud covering what would maybe be a group of 10-15 pixels or so. And it's not as though you can't see anything through it, but the image is just blurred and darkened in this spot.

Cleaning the screen has not helped, so we are not talking about something physically "on" the screen. The smudge also does not appear on external displays, so the problem must be with the LCD.

I have a couple of pictures: (on picture 1 look just below the "#right", and on picture 2 look 4 lines down)

If anyone knows what this might be, and whether it is likely to be covered by warranty, please respond :)

Best regards,
raabjerg

Call IBM and describe them the problem and tell them that you cannot use the computer because of the screen.

Good luck!

can't tell from the picture, but does it kind of look like a piece of debris that got in behind the screen?

That "smudge" is probably due to a pressure point; i.e. too much pressure was applied to the LCD and that point happened to take some small damage (could have caused the LCD screen to deviate from the matrix a little, which would cause a grey/dark blur),which happned to be visible. If a piece of debris got behind the screen, you would see a brightfield around it instead of a dark smudge. Does it look "blurry" no matter what angle you look at it from?

The blurr is still there when I look at it sideways, however, it fades away, i.e. the more inappropriate the angle, the less the blurr is visible...

Probably a pressure-induced spot. These spots can vary in shape and whether they are dark grey or an off-white depending on what happens to the LCD. They also, from what I have seen, tend to form on the sides of laptop LCDs. You could give IBM/Lenovo a calll and see if they will replace it free of charge or, if it is really not possible to live with on an operational basis day to day, you can simply get another LCD and install that. :)

For the most part, they are pretty harmless. I have seen them appear on some laptops and, usually, they look more out of place for the first few days; after awhile, they either fade away somewhat or the user gets used to them. :)
