Cursor acting weird, jumping around intermittently.

#1 Post by Uncletoad » Thu Oct 05, 2006 10:18 pm

Lately my cursor has taken to jumping around jerky like when I'm trying to do stuff. Typing is OK, and I can point and click anywhere it's just hard to get it to go where I want to. Always moves past where I want it to.

And then it's fine again. Works great for an hour or a day and then gets wacky and stays messed up for hours. Booting, even cold doesn't always fix it. It reminds me of what happens when Microsoft is jacking around with my system before it reminds me to updated something.

Ideas?

Isn't this caused by a worn out or dirty track point?

On my old 760 the cursor glides slowly glides around the screen after I take my finger off the track point (assuming that it does not ping fully back to the center and stays slightly 'nudged' to one side)
760ED All the way.

FEEL THE BURN! From the bottom of that particular laptop... right in the bawsack! eek

Maybe, but even the scrolling is goofy when it's in it's mood.

I hate to ask but....Have you run a spyware scan? :)

What is the CPU usage like when it is jerking around like that?

What are, if any, Syn processes doing when the Trackpoint is behaving like that?

I run them regularly, every weekend actually and am doing that right now. Spybot and Adaware. I'm not sure how to measure the CPU usage but that is what it seems like--some sort of heavy CPU use.

Syn processes? I'm not sure what that is.

Synaptics makes part of the drivers for the UltraNav, particularly the TrackPad. The little cursor that appears during scrolling, if you track it with the Task Manager correctly, is a Syn Visual Window.

Hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete to bring up the Task Manager, then monitor the CPU usage whenever that anomalous behaviour occurs. :)

Looking at the task manager window when the cursor acts weird shows that it's not a CPU use issue. I rarely peaks up to 50%. Never over 60% and most often around 1 or 3%.

I guess I should uninstall and reinstall the ultranav drivers.

Uninstalled and reinstalled UltraNav drivers. Still funky. Any more ideas?

My cursor would move on its own everything my palm is rested heavily on the thinkpad.

Try this, lift your palms off the machine completely and see if it still happens. I believe it's a design problem, i've experienced this since my T20 machine.

Good thought. That's not it though. Does it without me resting anywhere.

I have had problems with my windows help program. I haven't been able to get into it without it hanging. When it pops up it bogs down everything.

I wonder if they are related?

BTW when it happens the cursor does the same behaviour whether its on the trackpoint or the touchpad.

Scrolling is screwy then too. Typing is fine.
