DVI out on mini-dock broken?

#1 Post by noetus » Thu Oct 12, 2006 12:47 pm

Hello guys,

I just took delivery of a mini-dock for my T42. I plugged everything in (i'm using most of the ports out the back) and my external monitor via the DVI port (which goes to BNC inputs on the monitor). I can't seem to get the laptop to recognise that there is indeed a monitor plugged in. If I plug it into the VGA output of either the laptop or the dock, it works fine. Once it's plugged into the DVI output, nothing. Laptop reverts to internal LCD, and there's no indication of an external monitor attached. I've run the Catalyst utility for detecting displays (I have the ATI catalyst drivers installed) and I get nothing. I tested the monitor with the same cable from the DVI of another computer (a Dell desktop) and it worked fine. Does this indicate the DVI isn't working, or is there something I haven't done?

OK, I figured out the problem. I seems the DVI out on the TP doesn't support analog (i's DVI-D, not DVI-I). Yeah, I know, how many people would want to drve an analog montor these days, especially from a late-model TP? Well, I do, I have two 24" Sony Trinitrons, and I was hoping to be able to drive them both, with independent desktops, without having to go the PCI-Graphics-Card-in-Dock-II route, since I have read postings from people who have driven two independent external monitors successfully with the Dock or Port Replicator. Now I guess that applies to 1 external digital + 1 external analog monitor only. It makes sense that the TP can support two independent external monitors only if one of them is digital and one analog (or analog being fed via VGA to a digital monitor), since the analog output via the Dock (or Port Replicator) is just a pass-through, and that includes the analog that WOULD be fed through the DVI as well, except I guess the TP designers figured there would be no point in doing that.
