No luck in cloning HD and Questions

#1 Post by marcos » Thu Oct 12, 2006 2:23 pm

I tried to clone an HD using an external USB 2.0 enclosure (magnex). I used acronis trueimage 9.0 and have booted XP with the source and dest. disk, before and after cloning.

The disk did not boot, with the screen stayed black. So I learnt from the HOW-TO that one must correct the MountedDevices.

Since none of the three metodhos suited me, I tried editing the inactive registry by 'load hive' in a registry editor utility.

The utility did not let me unload the hive, beside that it appears to have worked fine, I ended deleting all entries in MountedDevices.

The disk still did not boot.

Here starts the question, assuming the misreferenced device was the problem, why is that everyone is working fine with acronis, and Is there a reason registry editing doesn't work, perhaps that's why is not listed as a method in the 'multiboot' page ?

However the HPA partionin was cloned fine and was able to recover XP from there, that ended being a much longer way to do things.

I have used Acronis to clone a 40gig to an 80gig drive, but this is using the second drive adapter that plugs into the CD rom slot. I found that this was the quickest way to do things. Also, if you buy this adapter, it includes a diskette that has cloning software on it. I have also used this and it also works fine.
