Can someone help me compare the 2373-8XU and the 2373-JXU?

#1 Post by Vasant56 » Wed Aug 25, 2004 7:20 pm

Because I wasn't able to get it through Bill (he was more than hospitable, problems on my end prevented it). I was still able to contact a relative of mine who works for IBM, and I can get these two models for a relatively equal low price:

2373-8XU
2373-JXU (about 40$ Cdn more)

Now, is the 8XU a better model with just a smaller screen? Or is the JXU just a larger model? Also, are the 15" models really clunky? Are they still thin and light portables?

I looked at the Tabook, but since it gives a bunch of different options I don't understand, could one of you experts help me out? Tell me what one offers over the other, etc.

My main question is still whether or not the 15" is portable.. I've never seen one..

Looks like the 8XU only has 802.11b while the JXU has 802.11b/g for the wireless card, so the JXU is better on that feature. Also since it is a 15" display, it is a flexview so the display will have a wider viewing angle. I would say the 15" is portable for sure, just not ultra-portable.
One other thing as I've mentioned before, the 15" models seem/feel like they are more solidly built. The 14" top cover/back of LCD is pretty flexable/squishy while the 15" is rock stiff/solid. That's my very technical description

Well, whether or not you will consider it portable is something that only you can decide based on how often you'll be carrying it and what else you'll be carrying along with it. If I'm traveling a lot, I want something as light as possible because I have back and shoulder problems. Even my 14" T40 work machine gets to be heavy lugging it back and forth every day, and it's considerably lighter than the T23 that is my personal machine. Had my company asked what I wanted, I would have chosen something from the X series, but that's just me.

I will have to carry it to and from class every day, but It will also be used as my primary desktop replacement while I'm away.

By the looks of it, I think I'll probably go for the 15"

3XU has Intel b/g, JXU has IBM b/g (with Atheros chipset) wireless card.

Good question. I swear to the IBM's Atheros one, others to Intel's. Atheros' advantage is its capability for up to 108Mbps data rates.
