[Search] COOL and quiet ThinkPad - maybe T42?

#1 Post by pvna » Sat Oct 14, 2006 8:56 am

Hello! I am new hear, new to ThinkPads, and new to notebooks in general. And I'm not good in english, hope you will understand me.

I want to buy a ThinkPad (unused) for around ~ 1000 / 1200 €
I read some websites & forums, and I think, the T-Series would be the best for me.

At first I thought of a T43, but I read, that there are often some thermal problems (too much heat, etc).

But it's very, very, very importan for me, that the Notebook is/stays "cool". I don't like that Notebooks, that get warm, even if you only browse the internet or something.

So I search for a "cool" notebook.
It's the most important criterion.

It should also have an average (or better) battery power.

And it shouldn't make loud noises (read of some thinkpads, where the fan was always active, even if you were only browsing the internet, etc)

And hardware power is unimportant for me.
I use the notebook only for small office, browsing the web, listening to music, instant messenging, etc
I don't want to play with it.

So, in this order:

1. cool (not producing much warmth)
2. "good" battery power (use it for university)
3. no crazy fan ( ;) )

Other conditions:
# W-LAN
# Windows XP
# CD-RW / DVD-ROM
# 14.1'' or 15.1''
# XGA (maybe!! SXGA+, but I am not sure about it - maybe it's too small for me ;) )

Well, can you help me?
Is there such a ThinkPad, which doesn't get warm (of course, you can't have an ice-cold-notebook, if you use it long time, but there are big differences.. I want to use it on my laps after hours, and I dont want to feel much warmth at the keyboard/etc.

What about the T42?
I could buy a new one on ebay.
But don't know, if it's "cool" and quiet... ?

The auction ends in a few hours, so fast opinions/help would be great :)

Is the T42 cool and quiet,
or are there better ThinkPad T-series?

Q. What about the T42?
A. Works for me. My T42, 14.1" XGA - quiet and cool. 8)

EDIT: While I am happy with XGA in the 14.1" model, if I was to get a 15" model, I would not get XGA. For a 15" model I would get SGXA+ (IMO, XGA would look somewhat grainy in a 15" model).

Ditto for my 15" T42 1.7 GHz.
I might even sell it if you are interested, but has english OS and keyboard :)
Beside, it's very very hard to sell a Thinpad that one use and love :D
T440s OK so far.
T420s NVIDIA graphics. Nice, then MB failure.
T400s Workhorse. two of'em, both faulty display with vertical stripes.
T43 °very nice° - MB reflown and dead, two of'em.
T42 15°, dead onboard wireless.
T40, dead memory slot, stolen from me
T30, stolen from me
TP600 dead

Yes T42 is one the best models in T4x series, which has the most optimal design in terms of balance between features , heat and weight ( esp the 14.1" ones ).

T42 with ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 GPU is your best bet.

Oh wow :)
Thanks for the answers!

Great. That's what I wanted to hear (hehe).

So, I think I will get a ThinkPad T42 14.1'' with XGA (Radeon 7500).

I am too afraid of SXGA+ - my eyes maybe aren't that good -.-

wow 1000 shipped. Id be jumping all over some 667 fsb. Im pretty fond of my 15 UXGA t42p though. Not too warm really at all. It gets warm when im playing Warcraft 3 though, but what wouldn't at 1600x1200 resolution. Not only that, but pretty graphic intense program. Either way t42 series is a great place to start. 6-cell with ultrabay battery is going to net you over 3 hours of battery life up to over 4 hours if they are newer. Possiblities are endless with this platform to start from. You cant go wrong.

R40 is the quietest thinkpad.

#9 Post by crazyfrog » Sat Oct 14, 2006 3:44 pm

T42 may be a good balance between powerful and quiet/cool, but R40 (P4M 2.0G) is the quietest Thinkpad I've ever used.

The cpu fan of R40 never runs during office work/playing music/surfing Internet. The only way of making the fan kick off is to run a CPU crucial application such as calculating PI!
