Thinkpad T43p Dual Display Settings.

#1 Post by eggonabull » Mon Oct 16, 2006 12:24 pm

Hey everybody,

I joined the forum in search of an answer to this problem. I have a T43p (1400x1050 native resolution), and an Impression LCD connected through the SVGA port which can't above 1024x768 without having the desktop extend beyond the screen to where is does that annoying rolly thing where the visible area scrolls when the mouse reaches the edge of the screen.

So, what I want I want to do is extend the desktop to the second monitor, so that it acts in its native resolution, while my thinkpad remains in its own.

HERE'S THE CATCH: I want the extended desktop configuration to remain, even when I close my laptop. That's the problem, it's easy to switch the configuration, but it always reverts to a dual display as opposed to an extended desktop when I close my thinkpad.

Thanks guys!

First, you are connecting an LCD to the VGA port? You should connect to the DVI port, as the LCD is a digital monitor. (Otherwise you are converting digital to analog back to digital again, loss of quality results.)

Second, you might try using alternative graphics drivers for your card rather than the Lenovo ones. Check the manufacturer's website. They might provide a utlity to allow you greater control over two monitors (as ATI's Catalyst does, for example).

Third, you should try UltraMon (google it) to run two separate monitors. It does a nice job adding the capability you require, plus other things, like extending the Windows taskbar to the extended desktop, allowing you different screensavers/wallpapers on the two desktops, and other such things.

Ahm, first not every LCD monitor has a dvi port. Second, TP t4x series (at least my t43) only have a VGA port, no DVI as far as I know.

Sorry, don't (didn't) know much about LCD screens, having never used one except the one built into my thinkpad. I guess I assumed -wrongly- that they all have digital inputs, since they are digital displays. Interesting that they don't. Also, I didn't check what the T43 has/doesn't have before I posted - I knew some of them have DVI ports, so just assumed they all did...

Guys, I have been looking and I still haven't found any way to do this. There must be some way to get it to keep the display properties when you close it.
