noisy fan in my T42

#1 Post by tigerguy » Wed Oct 18, 2006 7:17 am

I've also developed what sounds like a noisy fan in my T42p. It sounds like a small grinding noise - pulsating, not a constant noise. When I turn the unit on it's side with the fan outlet facing straight up in the air, the noise goes away. The fan seems to be cooling fine, but I'm concerned it may give out at any time.

I see some forum members have apparently oiled their fans, but I have no idea how to do that.

Do you think I should send it in to Lenovo for repair or is there perhaps a simpler, quicker fix that you know of? Does IBM have any local repair outlets that could look at it for me without sending it in and how do I locate one? I live in the Detroit area.

Many thanks!

You can oil the fan. I can't find the link from a guy explaining that process. Is quite simple. I did it for my T30 fan.

Thanks for the tip.

Where/how do you get access to the fan? What type of oil do I use?
