Intel 2100B and 2200BG cards max out a 1.2Mbps on T40

Has anyone had problems where the maximum throughput of their wireless card is lower than expected?

The Intel 2100B card on my T40 has never been able to go faster than 1.2Mbps even though my broadband connection is at 3 Mbps (confirmed via LAN and direct connections). This was tested using broadbandreports.com.

I switched the router from a Netgear MR814v2 to a Motorola WR850G and that didn't change things. Then the 2100B card was replaced with a 2200BG card using the Motorola in G mode -- no dice. Turning off WEP or WPA/TKIP doesn't help things either. Both wireless adapters were set to maximum performance. Switching between Access Connections and XP's Wireless Zero Configuration doesn't make a difference either.

So between two different wireless adapters in both B and G mode and two different routers, I have never been able to get more than 1.2 Mbps. Any wired connection works fine at full speed. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

I was getting 1400Kbps on wlan and 3000Kbps over ethernet.

I was going to follow the advise on this FAQ:
http://www.broadbandreports.com/faq/593 , and answer those 11 questions in order to post my situation in their forums.
But, the number 1 item was to run the tweaks test on this page:
http://www.broadbandreports.com/tweaks

That suggested i use an RWIN value between 22000 and 79000 (or somesuch) - so I used 40000
RWIN is the Tcp Receive Window, and I used DrTCP to change it:

After changing the RWIN, I went from a max of 1400Kbps to over 2900Kbps.

I used speed tests from http://www.dslreports.com/stest and also the very simple one at http://us.mcafee.com/root/speedometer/default.asp

That was it, thanks! I changed the RWIN to a higher value and my download speeds are now where they should be. Though dslreports.com doesn't show a big improvement in download speeds, the McAfee test as well as randoms downloads show the improvement.

I haven't had to mess around with RWIN settings since the early days of Windows 95, funny that the same TCP/IP settings would have different effects on wired LAN vs. wireless LAN.

That's strange that dslreports.com doesnt show an improvement ... I get similar speeds from any of the speed tests.

One of my programmer friends was trying to explain the RWIN to me - because I, too, was wondering why my speeds would be different on ethernet vs wlan. I still don't understand, though.
But, I did this to my X21 that has a Belkin 54G pcmia wlan and an HP laptop with onboard 54G wlan. They both had the same problem too. Those are the only wlan's I have access to.
