Port replicator for T42

I need DVI for my LCD. Can I use Port Replicator (version I, the one for T2x, T3x) on my T42? It's much cheaper than Port Replicator II on ebay. I don't really need the USB2.

i dont think the old port replicators for the t2x/t3x series works for a t42.

The Replicator II is about 70-90€ in Europe, I know it works with A2x and T4x. Check for compatibility of Replicator I on Lenovo site.

No, the port rep I will not work on a t4x. have to get the port rep II

What's the max resolution of the Port Rep II DVI Output?

I want to use a T42 w/ a 1600x1200 LCD panel.

It works fine w/ VGA, but I am thinking that DVI would look better.

Is it worth it?

I am running a Dell 20" LCD @ 1600x1200 on DVI through a Port Replicator II no problem.

Thanks for the comment on this (the lenovo site said that only 1280x1024 was supported.) Oh, I now see that's on the "dock II"..

DVI pass-through port ( will support resolutions up to 1280x1024 based on attached system).

Not sure why the Dock II is not as good as the Port Rep II, but maybe the marketing blurb for the Dock II was written before the TPs came out with decent video cards.

Is the quality better w/ the Port Rep II using DVI than w/ the VGA cable?

could not tell you quality difference as never used VGA for hooking it up!

is a good writeup on why IBM/Lenovo only officially 1280x1024 w/ the port rep II.

Turns out that applies to certain models. I'd copy/paste the details here, but suggest you just go read the page if you're interested.

Bottom Line: T42 w/ ATI 9600 appears to just work up to 1920x1200; other models may require a driver upgrade.
