T42 & Dock II or mini-dock does not boot with KVM?
Anyone else experience this?
I have 5 new T42 (2373-9ZU), 5 new mini-dock and 1 dock II.
if I plug them into a KVM using PS2 keyboard/mouse ports then the thinkpads will not boot. it will either sit at the IBM bios logo screen or give a blank black screen forever.
If I plug them into a KVM using USB keyboard/mouse then it works fine.
IBM has already tried swapping dock/mini-dock and it makes no difference.
Also tried an A22 and get the same result. Tried 5 different KVM's (different brand & model) and get the same result.
Anyone else experience this? what was the fix for it? thanks

Not sure what you're asking? Did you plug the keyboard and mouse into the PS2 ports on the IBM docks or into a KVM splitter which then plugs into the dock? What are the part numbers of the docks?

yeah- same problems here.
I freaked out, because the thinkpad wouldn't boot!
I'm using an iogear audio ps2 kvm, and my t42 would not boot when the mouse ps2 port was plugged into the mini-dock ii. Seems to work just fine when i plug the kb/mouse in directly to the dock.
Additionally, the thinkpad dock (or the thinkpad) won't recognize the kvm's mouse input. keyboard's fine. I have a feeling this problem's related.
Before i figured this out, i must have flashed the bios 20 times.
What do you think?

I'm having the same problem here with my mini-dock. I have a T40 running XP Pro with SP 2 and an IO/Gear 2 port kvm. When I boot the laptop, the mouse is not recognized nor is the keyboard.
Part # of my mini-dock is 2878.
Thanks for any input.

Same problem with a T42p (2379-DYU). Just bought a Port Replicator II and popped my T42p into it while it was in standby. Brought it out of standby and it couldn't find the mouse but the keyboard worked. Attempted to reboot and it hung up on the IBM logo screen.
I am using a 4 port IOGear PS2 KVM which worked quite well with my previous A30p and its Port Replicator I.

I just spoke to one of the guys in my IT department and they had this problem before. Their solution was to purchase a PS2 to USB connector and told me to do the following:
Connect the KVM PS2 connectors to this adapter and then plug it into the USB port on the back of the minidock II. I'm going to order one of these and then report my results when this thing arrives.

I took the advice of the stupid IT guy and bought a usb to ps2 connector. Now my Thinkpad will boot up and can be viewed on my monitor but the keyboard does not work. When I try to type in my log on password, I will hit one key and then it goes and types it like 100 times by itself. I'm willing to try one more ps2 to usb adapter. I just used the cheapest one at Fry's that I could find.

Does anyone have the AT -> PS/2 and PS/2 -> AT converters referred to try the solution out?

Good find! I'm gonna make a trip to fry's during lunch today to find this converter.
This is what I read on the link posted above:
1. You can purchase two adapters for your PS/2 cable connecting the CPU switch to the keyboard input on the PC computer. One adapter to convert one end of the cable to AT standard and another to convert the AT back to PS/2 so you may plug it back into the PC. Since the AT style keyboard only has 5 pins, the 6th pin's communication will be cut off and the conflict should cease.
2. You can use a serial mouse setup instead to completely bypass the PS/2 conflict.
3. At one end of the cable connected the CPU Switch to the keyboard (not the mouse cable) input on the PC you can clip the 6th Pin. This is quicker and less expensive than buying an adapter, but will leave this cable unavailable to be used for Daisy Chaining since Daisy Chain needs the 6th pin to detect another CPU switch.
I'm not quite understanding #1. Why would I need two adapters? I was thinking of only needing one adapter for the mouse that goes into the back of the minidock. Also not sure why you would need to get another converter to convert the AT back to PS/2?
Can someone explain this a little better before I go to Fry's?

I have a T42p with the Port Replicator II and an Iogear 4 port PS/2 KVM and was running into the same problems as discussed on this forum. I tried the following items without help:
1. Used a PS/2 -> AT converter and an AT -> PS/2 converter in-line (suggested from Iogear web site).
2. Used a PS/2 -> USB convert to plug mouse cable into USB plug on Port Replicator.
I was almost to the point of simply ordering a new mouse ($16 for the mouse sounded better than $130 for a new KVM) when I found the following product from Iogear.
http://www.iogear.com/main.php?loc=prod ... m=GUC100KM
I just got it this morning and it seems to work great. I purchased this item from TigerDirect for $19.99 (plus shipping).
Hope this helps.
