T42p Recovery media

#1 Post by Utwig » Sat Oct 28, 2006 11:41 pm

What kind of recovery media would I need for T42p, are they model specific (mine is 2373-HTG) or series specific (T4x).

I have HDD with 2 partitions, big C and 5GB D. They were both empty since the laptop belonged to a company.

The seller said that he can maybe provide a copy of recovery media but they cannot be updated to SP2 (maybe he's a newb).
T540p, T420s (soon to be T420ps :) ), X61t, T60p, T42p, A21p

In theory, any set of recovery CD's of the T4x series would recover your system.

My T41p CD's also restore R50 and R50e. By saying the word restore means that also all the controllers are automatically installed.

If you, for example use a T40 Recovery set, you would need to download the appropiate drivers for your laptop.

I've a set of T42 CD's that didnt work with my machine. But I think those were created using the software IBM provides (Thinkvantage Rescue & Recovery)

Then I managed to order over the phone the original CD's for my machine, although the CD's are not labeled for my machine type (2373-GEG) are labeled to restore a T41, T41p, R50, R50e Thinkpads.
Those CD's install Windows XP with the Service Pack 2 included BTW

Some older versions didn't come with SP2, because it probably was not out at that time, and/or IBM was still testing it. For my older machines I have one of those SP2 CD's I got from MS early on and I use that just fine. Most machines now ship with SP2 so it is included on the recovery CD's.

I'd just get a copy of SP2 on CD and install it after you recover. cheers!

Try it, what do you have to lose?

If your machine is blank, and you have T42 recovery CDs, just load them and see what happens!
