IBM T40 noises?

#1 Post by ibmt40 » Sat Aug 28, 2004 5:11 am

Hey

I just bought a IBM t40, 1.5Ghz.

And i have wondered how much the fan should be running.
The first 15-30 minutes tha fan is quiet but when it goes on it stays on no matter what (almost). Both with AC adapter plugged and unplugged.

Second of all, when I turn off my computer and it is recharging the batteri it is making this high pitched noise that only stops if I unplug the AC adapter..

The company I bougth this machine at have told me that they don't know if it is normal the way my machine is noise(the fan only), but that some think T40 is making some noises. And if I would like he will take it back and give me a new one instead - could that help?

How do i find out wheter my fan is a long fan or short fan?

I hope you can help me decide whether it is normal or not what i am experiencing...

Thanks in advance.

Many T40 exibit noises that you have described and many (if not all) run fan all the time. I would keep this laptop provided there is no dead pixels. Check out FAQ for parts lookup.

ibmt40,

What is the FRU number listed on the sticker on the back of your AC Adapter? I had the exact same problem with an AC adapter that had a FRU starting with 02K (I can't remember the last 3 characters).

I called IBM and they sent me FRU 08K8209 (Revision E) and it works much better (no funny noises, and the wire that plugs into the socket is also much heavier gauge).

There is a stinker on the cable with the number:
(well there is a hell of a lot of numbers)

76h3518 - 32/03
ECE71924Q

There is a FRU P/N: 0K8203 (which it probably is)

BTW my PC has the modelnr. 2374-QG2
can anyone tell me what fan is in that one?

I think the 0K8203 is the original AC adapter shipped with T40s, and I think that model did have buzzing problems. I had one of them before I got the 02K and the buzzing was really annoying. It wasn't until I got the 08K209 that I didn't have noise problems.

If you call IBM and tell them your AC adapter is making excessive noises they will send you a new replacement.

My fan seems to run continuously, but at a very low speed (I can't hear it, but I can feel the slight movement of air away from the vent).

You may want to go to IBM's website and download the lastest BIOS and Embedded Controler.

I have downloaded and installed both.

I can't find my modelnr. i the ibm specs list - so i can see if i have the noisy fan or not...

Check the modelnr. and maybe someone can help me answer what fan is installed in my t40.
