Anything to look out for when installing linux?

#1 Post by highgrovemanor » Mon Oct 30, 2006 10:02 pm

I saw a Rescue and Recovery Repair Diskette reference that looked good to have onhand...but otherwise...what else should I lookout for if I want to install ubuntu? I intend to keep the partition with the IBM restore (as its gotten me out of some wifi-binds before)....

TIA

Steve

I would make a set of recovery disks first. Just in case :SH!:

Definitley have everything backed up for the worst case scenario.

Personally, i'm waiting for ATI to fix a problem with the 1400x1050 screen being improperly detected in linux with the ATI fglrx drivers causing the screen to 'flicker', almost as if it was a crt @ 60hz (not the same reason but the same look)

You should not encounter any problems installing linux. To keep your IBM rescue partition working you should NOT change the MBR but install the new bootloader to /boot. I am running gentoo on my T43 (15", 1450x1050, ATI X300) and everything works perfectly including 3D graphic acceleration (ATI driver), fingerprint reader, switching between monitor/display on the fly, battery management, suspend to disk/ram,... (don't know about the modem).

Have fun...

Good advise everybody! There isn't any data to loose, just a matter of time & effort of undoing any mis-steps. :D

Its for 14" T43..x300 video.......1.5Gig RAM......

I installed Ubuntu 6.06.1 on the weekend onto my T41p. I didn't need the hidden disc area (R&R) because I wasn't gouing to re-install Windows (but I made a set of recovery discs for when/if I sell it on)

I am not sure if the presence of the R&R partition would help you with wireless drivers in Ubunutu.

Blow the R&R away (you will need to unprotect it in the BIOS) use the extra disc space and live on the edge!

What about the hard disk air bag protection on linux? Is it there?

Nope. You will have to live without that for now.
