T42 Hard drive specs....

#1 Post by Scuzzzed » Sat Aug 28, 2004 6:50 pm

What is the buffer size on the OEM hard drive that comes with the T42 (2378-FVU)?
Is it 2MB or 8MB? I’ve been hunting IBM's website with no avail.

Also, does anyone have a 7200 RPM hard drive installed? If so, is it noisy or does it emit too much heat? I’m pondering whether to get a 7200 RPM Hard drive.

Thanks for the info... :D

My new T42p with the 60GB 7200rpm drive shows that it has 8MB cache on it.

Noise - I can't tell at all whether it's even on - it's dead quiet, at least in my office which has one desktop PC humming nearby. It's not the quietest office, but it's not loud either, and if I can't tell when it's spinning, I think that's a good sign.

Heat - the ThinkPad case around where the drive is feels "cold" to the touch, and my trusty laser surface thermometer shows temperature of 88 degrees Fahrenheit. That's after having it running for about 4 hours now, since I turned it on.

These tests and specs are coming from a brand new T42p with 14.1" SGXA model. My other one, T42p with 15" UXGA should be arriving next week, but I have a feeling the HD cache and temperature should be the same between these models.

Hope this helps.

After swapping a 5400 drive for the 7200 one, I recommend it to everyone. I had the same questions as you and decided to take the risk, and boy did it pay off! It emits the same noise/heat as the 5400 and is MUCH faster in all respects. BTW, I believe all 7200 Hitachis have 8MB cache.

The T42 (2378-FVU) is equipped with the 5400 RPM 8MB cache HDD.

The 7200RPM HDD in my T42P is barely audible over the fan. It only gets slightly warm when working hard. If you're just browsing and not doing something disk intensive, it'll feel cool.

Guys,

Is the 7200RPM Hitachi the only hard drive that ships with the T42 15"? Or is there more than one FRU number (i.e. more than one supplier/brand)?

If so, would you know the FRU number of your hard drive?

Thanks!

No. Even if there is a difference, it can't be more than 5 mins because of the drive's specs.
