This is probably a bone-head question (and I fully expect a bone-head answer), but I noticed this evening when I booted up my CD/DVD drive is "missing".
Checking the Device Manager I see:
Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)
Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device.
I tried the troubleshooter - it suggested uninstalling the drive and using the "Add New Hardware" wizard, but no luck.
I jumped over to both IBM's site and Lenovo's site, but I couldn't track down the drivers...I could have missed something, but I think I was pretty thorough (it's been a long day). There was something on the Lenovo site about a cdtpgdos.exe file, but it was for DOS and Win 3.1 (to be run from a floppy).
Is there a simple solution? Can I just use my R&R discs?
Thanks, in advance.
-Andrew

Do you have both iTunes and Nero installed?
If you do, iTunes (more correctly QT7) is messing with you, it tries to take over the machine completely by "owning" any CD writing drives - ("All your CD are belong to us")
I had the same problem about 3 months ago and found a very weird (but effective fix) - Try this

Let me add the fix here in case the link goes down (unlikely but possible)
Start Registry Editor (Start, Run and type in regedit then click)
Find "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters" (and "UpperFilters.bak" "LowerFilters.bak", if they exist) value under the following key in the registry, and delete it:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Quit Registry Editor.
Reboot.
NOTE: You might need to reinstall any CD recording apps you have, if they start to not work completely, after doing this.

I don't have Nero, but I did inadvertantly install Quicktime 7 (which I believe had the option of opting out of the iTunes install but may have surreptitiously done something...).smugiri wrote:Do you have both iTunes and Nero installed?
I need to, at some point, go back to QT6-Pro. But that's beside the point, because the registry deletion suggested at sillydog.org did the trick!
Thanks so much for pointing me in the correct direction!
