T43 slow

#1 Post by alfio » Sat Nov 04, 2006 12:04 pm

any ideas as to what might be slowing down my T43? i've run spybot, symantec antivirus, ad-aware but can't seem to find anything. i cna't figure this out 'cause i haven't installed anything lately but in the last two-three days, my notebook has gotten so much slower than it used to be.

the symptoms are most obvious when starting (it takes at 3X as long as it used to) as well as when running any ap (MS Word takes way longer than it used to).

i'm pasting a link to a pic of my task manager http://picasaweb.google.com/8thstreetho ... 2529684498- anything there that shouldn't be? i appreciate any help with this

TIA

Judging by the image, you´re running more than 62 processes!!

On my desktop im running only 25
I think you have a virus, some phantom/fake filenames

If I were you, I would save your data, and then restore your laptop to the OEM condition using Rescue & Recovery.

After that, don't use Norton. Use Avast free Home Edition or AVG Antivirus 7.0 Free Edition, both are great and much less resource intensive than Norton.

Also, make sure to map Network drives carefully. If your "My Documents" and "My Pictures" folders are mapped to a network drive, it will take forever to open/edit/close Office documents because they will be looking for those directories whether you're connected to the network drives or not.

After this, your laptop should fly! I love my T43.

First, the NUMBER of processes is NOT indicative of a problem. I have 80 running on my T41 and have ZERO problems. I could not read the jpeg, so see if you can post the processes in text here to determine if there is a problem.

Second, to the query "Are you running Norton?", you answered Symantec. If indeed you are running Symantec Corporate, it is NOT a resourece hog. Norton Retail can be a resource hog, but it can usually be coralled.

Third, get Ad Aware and run it to remove spyware.

Fourth, check your temporary files and state of defragmentation. IE appropriates commonly 1.2Gb for temp files. That is too large in my opinion, because it checks through those files. Clean out your temp files with the Windows Disk Cleanup tool (all your temp files) and then set IE for a Cache of 80 Mb (I use 20 Mb and that is plenty). Having cleaned up temp files, run the on-board disk defragmenting tool. Then, see if there is any difference.

Fifth, if you have not already done so, get rid of the eye candy - it robs performance. My Computer -> Properties -> Advanced -> Adjust for best performance and then select Smooth edges of Screen Fonts and Common Tasks in Folders only. That will help.

Only after you have done the above and it remains slow, consider backing up and reinstalling Windows.

JD's right it is hard to read, even after magnification blowup, it does look like there is a big number in your system idle processes, what is it?

Try grabbing a copy of XP Lite and reinstall with that. I think it has something like 17 processes out of the box. I used it on my T43, and it was around 10 secs from pressing the power button to windows desktop.

You're right. There's a piece of software called n-lite which lets you "personalize" your copy of Windows XP. All you need is the I386 directory, and then remove lots of things you don't need

JDHurst suggestions are very good, the biggest performance hogs are the Norton AntiVirus 04,05,06, and the eye candy appearance on XP.

If you just want to get rid of the sluginess of your machine, simply restore you machine using Rescue & Recovery to factory state.
The remove Norton, remove unecesarry software you do not need.
Secondly, I recommend you to install NOD32 AntiVirus, it works better than McAfee/Symantec/Avast to name a few. Add that it takes very few megs off your system.

And to optimize even better your browsing performance, ditch IE, and install the newest Firefox 2!

Good luck

Do not use norton, that is a well know memory hog.

As many said, start with a fresh install then use other antivirus and see the difference.

If you suspect of that you may have spyware on your lappy use spybot it is free.

ok, i uploaded a different picture, hopefully this one is easier to read (i'm not sure, btw, as to how to get better results using the limited tools at my disposal: windows paint and print screen)

there seems to be no virus, or at least nothing that the multitude of programs i've thrown at it can detect but its still running a ridiculously high process count (and i always try to keep programs down to a minimum) and its still very slow.

the picture i uploaded now has the programs listed in alphabetical order and it is easier to see that there are a number of duplicates. something is clearly wrong, i just don't know what.

thanks all for the detailed responses, hope the new pic helps

Looks like system idle processes is OK.

I'd check event viewer.
Run PC doc
Maybe boot into safe mode and see how slow things are in there.
Do a system restore back a week or two and see if the computer speeds up, that may point to a recently installed app or update of an application or av.

Sounds to me like your hard drive is running in PIO mode. Go to Start > Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager, then open IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. Double-click Primary IDE Channel (normally for the hard drive) and choose Advanced Settings. Current transfer mode should be Ultra DMA. Also check Secondary IDE Channel (normally for the optical drive) as it should also be using Ultra DMA. If you find you are running in PIO mode, see fix in following link.
