Burnt Smell

#1 Post by Sasha » Sat Nov 04, 2006 7:43 pm

My ThinkPad has started giving out a burnt smell when switched on. It is not consistent, comes and goes. I cannot target the exact point of origin of the smell (bad nose-- :( ). I checked the battery for any leaks or smells and also the power adapter for loose/exposed/broken wire. Nada!!

FYI, Mobile Meter reads my CPU temperature at 64 deg C and my hard disk at 41.

This is becoming worrisome. Can anyone help me?

TIA

Is it possible the cooling fan motor has given out?

If it is the fan, then you can stop the motor with FCU for awhile and see if the smell goes away or lessens; I do, however, suspect it is something else if the fan is operating normally. The only other thing I could think of is that either something got stuck in a hot part of the Thinkpad and is now burning, or there is an insulation component on the wiring that is roasting. :|

You could, if you wanted to, run the Thinkpad with the keyboard detached, but still connected, to see if there is any smoke coming from the interals that you can see.

The fan is running alright. Which leads me to think along the lines of Bgradid. Looks like an insulation component.

Gonna remove the keyboard and test it out.

Thanks guys

Your CPU temperature seems quite high, was that temp @ load or @ idle?
