1280 x 720 to external screen and hello??

I hooked up my T41p to a 1280x720 widescreen display and configured my graphical display settings to just the same. But although the desktopresolution is 1280x1024, the actuall screenresolution stays 1280x1024. ?? Is this a limitation of the ramdac or is there some other software issue?? I tried different non 4:3 resolutions and all 1280x??? desktopresulitions output with a 1280x1024 sync, exept for 1280x980 and upwards. I use the latest Omega-drivers.
