Dear All,
just got my thinkpad from the repair depot. Had screen, hd, planar card, keyboard and keyboard bezel replaced. Everything is terrific other than the fact that my BT is no longer recognized in device manager.
I got a replacement bluetooth module from ibm, swapped it and still the same story. Everytime i power it up it says USB device not recognized, but there is no unrecognized usb device in device manager. It is only a task manager pop that comes up in windows. The same type that comes up when you add or remove a device.
I really don't want to send my lovely back to the dept. Any suggestions? Thanks.
Gene
BLUETOOTH FN+F5 USB DEVICE NOT RECOGNIZED
Did you run install and run the software installer?
Software installer
You need to install the bluetooth and wifi drivers.

cmarti, thanks for the reply, i did indeed run the software installer and that did not help. notably, the bluetooth module includes the 56k modem which is detected and seems to work just fine. i find this nearly as strange as the fact that when i power up the bluetooth via Fn + F5 that i get a usb device message.
Small update for anyone interested and to bump this up. I sent in my thinkpad again and they replaced the bluetooth module. This of course did not do the trick because just a day earlier i had replaced the bluetooth module and that did not solve it. After what must have been multiple phone calls they agreed to send me a planar board so that I can replace it myself, eventhough it is not a user replaceable part. I had asked many times for a 1 time on-site courtesy visit from a technician but they would not relent.
So, now I have a planar board waiting to be slipped into my trust thinkpad, but not the time to do the repair. I briefly glanced over the maintenance manual and its probably 50 screws to get the planar board out. Not fun.
As a side point, I installed MSDN Vista on the T42P and it runs very well. I have 2gb memory, dothan cpu, and 7200 rpm 60gb drive. So, if anyone is thinking about going Vista, I would recommend it.
Anyhow, now that I have vista installed the device manager actually reports an "unknown usb device" which I suspect is the bluetooth device. Unfortunately I can not update that device with the Bluetooth drivers and make it work.
Again, if anyone has any ideas or feedback it would be much appreciated.
p.s. thinkpad ezserv should be called ezship4free. sorry that i couldnt thinkg of anything more witty but the only thing that is good about the service is the time it takes them to ship you a box or a replacement part. there is either a terrible pressure from management on turning around the numbers or the techs dont give a hoot about their work. everytime i get my thinkpad back it is either not fixed or there is something new wrong with it. it has been to the depot at least 10 times in the past year. this is not normal.
