T42 hdd upgrade (Samsung HM120JC)

#1 Post by schmaud » Sat Nov 11, 2006 7:01 am

Hallo,

is there anything arguing aginst the samsung spinpoint M60 series, speciffically the Samsung HM120JC? 120 GB, 8MB cache 5400 rpm.

The original 40 GB 5400 rpm drive is getting to small, otherwise it was fine.
So I am locking for something which is bigger, nut not slower, does not take more energy, and does not make more noise.

Thanks,

ralf

The HM120JC should work just fine. I haven't personally used a Samsung laptop hard drive, but I have used their desktop hard drives and they lasted much longer than the Maxtors they replaced. They are still working fine. The specs below threw me off for a minute. When I saw that the width was listed as 3.94", I thought it was a desktop hard drive. Samsung labels the width what I would call the depth, and vice versa.

HM120JC Dimensions
Height 0.37 in
Width 3.94 in
Depth 2.75 in

I have three of these drives. I use two of them as external USB hard disks, and one of them has replaced my Hitachi 60 gig 7200 HDD in my T41p.

The drive works fine, and I was even able to restore the hidden partition area from the Hitachi drive to the Samsung drive. I was then able to do a "factory restore" and had windows installed on the new drive.
