So my T42 makes a SOUND whenever I maximize or minimize

#1 Post by bioyuki » Mon Aug 30, 2004 9:53 pm

So I have all sounds muted right now. However whenever I minimize or maximize any window from any program my laptop makes a tiny sound. I thought I was going insane but my roommates here it too.

It seems to be emanating from the upper left hand part of the keyboard. It doesn't make the sound when I alt+tab between screens, only when I maximize or minimize screens. It doesn't matter if I mute sounds through the keyboard button or through windows.

So yeah, this is the weirdest thing I've ever encountered. Any possiblities? I feel like if I call IBM with this they're gonna think I'm crazy

I hear the same thing and I've asked this before (No answers, though). Note that the causes vary. For example: I hear it when I scroll down/up using the wheel of my USB optical mouse. It sounds like a faint shirping noise.

It goes on and off for me - So I can't exactly say where it's coming from.

I've read (here somewhere) that it's normal - I also recall someone mentioning something about the USB ports...Anyone knows?

I've noticed it too, especially with scrolling or dragging large windows around - it sounds like faint ratcheting or gears meshing (probably the pulleys behind the screen responsible for moving your windows around).

My initial thought was that it's just something associated with the dynamic transister shut-off from the video chipset. Do something that requires a bit more power than idle, and you hear some electrical noise output. Putting my ear close to the keyboard, it definitely sounds like it's coming from the CPU/GPU area.

Holy crap, I get the same exact thing when I scroll up or down using the touchpad or with a mouse. I thought I was going insane. And yeah it sounds like its coming from the USB port areas.

I think it is a DC/DC converter in the power supply.

When the battery is a a lower state of charge, I hear this too on my T41. It could be that the current to charge the battery plus the rather peaky current demands of the system when graphics functions are manipulating large amounts of data results in the DC/DC converter to "squeal" audibly.

When the batteries are at a higher charge, I dont hear the noise.

Try the same experiment when the barrery is charged up

In my case, the battery is at 100% and on AC power - Also, the sound seems to be coming from the fan - I have the original fan - Which consequently, is on ALL the time - Except when the machine is off :)

I HOPE the FRU 08K8205 Adapter isn't "known to be faulty".... cause it's the one they ship with every T42  .... (although, I DID have one of them go completely dead last week!)
