Will I Void my Warranty?

#1 Post by revolutionary_one » Mon Nov 13, 2006 2:36 pm

Hello once again.

I have a 256MB dimm that came with the thinkpad and another 512MB dimm that i put in with the easily accessible slot on the bottom of the laptop.

I wanted to add another 512MB so-dimm that i have here and sell the 256MB dimm. I know there are IBM videos out there that are quite useful.

my only concern is whether this will void my warranty. And secondly, since its quite a hassle to remove that internal DIMM everytime i need to send this thing into warranty, what's IBM's liability policy on user upgrades and say if i dont get everything as i wanted?

thanks

The memory is something that can be replaced by the customer and, for the most part, is considered an upgrade. The warranty isn't voided by replacing the last of the memory that shipped with the Thinkpad with your own so long as the specs of the newer memory match or exceed those of the stick that you are replacing; i.e., if you put in memory that you know is of lesser quality or incompatible, then that would be a problem, but not if it is the same, or a better, stick. :)

I met someone who looks a lot like you.
She does the things you do.
But she is an IBM.

What's IBM's policy regarding Depot repairs and user upgrades.
I know the FAQ Mentions removing the HD and such before sending it in, unless the parts are otherwise, involved with the problem. But what about when I take my laptop apart and have to send it in to Depot? What's IBM's policy on user upgraded hardware that's sent in/left in? If they damage or somehow the part goes missing, does IBM incur liability for it?

The only reason i ask is that its a major hassle to have to deal with taking apart the laptop the laptop everytime I need to send this thing into depot (which is an inconvenience in itself). Thanks for the advice.

When you send in your laptop to be repaired, you will have to fill out an inventory sheet detailing what you are sending in. On this sheet, you are also asked for passwords etc.

I just sent in my T41 for a motherboard repair (ethernet port not working) I took out my HDD and the Optical drive but left in the memory that I added. It came back correctly.

But does IBM accept liability for any missing or damaged user installed / upgraded parts that I send in??

Anyone here ever had this happen to them?
