My T43 has gone bonkers

#1 Post by DDGuy » Tue Nov 14, 2006 9:00 am

Till today I could have sworn that laptops are computing devices devoid of human sentiments such as "moods" but I am no longer sure. My T43 for past 15 days has been acting really funny. One day suddenly I noticed that many program icons are missing from the Windows tray (AC, Odyessy, Norton AV, Nokia SW..etc.), power manager is not working (no battey icon), Fn+ anything doesn't bring up the on screen display's....based on the advice I did a system restore and things were fine for few days....then I did a update of the system using Software Installer...chose to update AC, most drivers including power manager, everything went well for few days and today its gone back to its bad "moods"...back to where it was...I have not installed anything in past twp days ever since the update and it beats me that how come it was fine for few days and not fine today

Any body seen anything like that?

By any chance have you recently upgraded to PC Doctor version 5? If so, please read following thread: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=32675

Thanks for yr reply but no, I have not upgraded to PC DOC 5. I do have PC DOC3.5, which has been there for long without much issues.

Doesn't sound too much at all like the PCD5 Upgrade issue as your tray icons disappeared and, overall, more serious components are affected although it does sound like the side effect of installing over the software that is already there to begin with...which is a possible "trap" with the PCD5 problem and registry issues.

What processes are/aren't running when you can't access Fn+F5, any of the other key combos, and the tray icons aren't appearing?

What does the startup process list look like? You might also want to clean out your registry with something like CCLeaner or RFA. :)

I met someone who looks a lot like you.
She does the things you do.
But she is an IBM.

AC: Its seem to be running as the programs that are supposed to start when my office profile is applied are indeed running but no icon, when I try to run it manually, I get that famous QCTray error box. I am able to change profile using QCtray command from Run prompt.

Fn+F5 : Surprise, surprise...this one brings up on screen display but all I see is Bluetooth in it and no 802.11 stuff !!!!

Fn+F7: No on screen display, though the display toggles between projector and my screen as expected. If I run it from Start menu, then I get the config screen and all that but on boot up its not there in the background.

Fn+F9: Nothing !!!! (Easy Eject) (Had to run Easy Eject from program menu but once closed Fn+F9 doesn't work again)

On screen display for Volume, forward/backward key : Dead

Power Manager : Not there at all

Mcafee AV : No icon

Odyssey Client for WiFi: No icon but is running in background. When I start it again from start menu, it comes in the tray otherwise not.green

Nokia PCSuite: Not started (need to start manually and even then it keeps dropping off the BT Connection). I repaired the installation for this and it was OK for a day or two now back to same problem.

There is something that is causing this all...all this happened togather one bad morning

Just to be safe go to www.trendmicro.com and run their online virus and malware check. Probably not the problem but let's eliminate it first.

Next run a full disk check using PC Doctor, including a surface scan. Again, probably not but eliminate disk errors as a suspect.

After that you need to start looking at what you have installed or run lately that might be causing problems. Most likely suspects are system tweaking or maintenance utilities. I like System Mechanic for instance, but in it's default configuration it disables a number of important startup programs that I want running (thinks they are "unnecessary").
